Hi,
I have just picked up a pair of 2 Layer Gore-Tex hard shell pants and very happy with them. My previous pants had built in insulation, 60g wadding, where as my new ones are just a shell.
Currently I usually wear a pair of Forcefield Boom Shorts which were my sort of base layer and then would just wear my insulated pants on top. I never really got too cold but seen as my new pants have no insulation I think it would be wise to invest in another layer, I would hate to be too cold. I am currently thinking a pair of Icebreaker 3/4 leggins would be a decent buy but am curious is anyone else has a better suggestion?
Would the best solution be to buy a proper base layer and then my kit would be something like, base layer > impact shorts > shell pants?
Or do you think a better option would be to pick up more of a mid layer instead so something like, impact shorts > mid layer > shell pants?
Also one last question to anyone who wears impact shorts, what order would you wear them? Under your base layer or over it?
Thanks

Welcome to snowheads @ashore.
This subject has just been debated HERE. Some good advise.
In answer to your question; I say thermals first and then impact shorts. You'll probably have more than one pair of thermals with you and would provide a bit of a hygiene barrier to the thermal shorts.

Impact shorts over thermals for me - in the days when I snowboarded a bit. I have insulated ski trousers and always wear merino base layer too, if it's cold. If I had just shell trousers I'd often have two layers underneath. I.e. a three layer system, which I also use under sailing outerwear even in summer round the coast of the UK in nasty weather. In fact many of the base and mid layers double for skiing and sailing.

I have arcteryx shell pants, and wear 1 base layer underneath, never been cold, even skiing in really bad conditions. Get a decent base layer, like arcteryx, and you'll be fine. If the shell does its job correctly you wont feel any wind or cold through through the material.
Hope this helps.

Thanks all for the help. I had seen the other thread enquiring about thermals but wasn't sure if people may have suggested a mid layer or something else instead. Seems like a good base layer is the way to go.

I've used Under Armour thermals for the last five years and would thoroughly recommend them,

@ashore, 3/4 base layer is the way to go, as you don't want to interfere with your boots, by wearing something that goes down to your ankles. I have some Arcteryx Phase SV Boot cut for really cold days -15C and below. I normally just use a compression layer and shell pants.

@ashore,
powerstretch tights can be either midlayer over thermals or a heavy weight base layer. I rarely need both under shells.
