The Dolomites I think, because the scenery is so beautiful and the food is so delicious. And the skiing is good too

for god's sake do a few leg exercises between now and going, just some basic squats without weights, 3 sets of 10 each day otherwise your quads are gonna scream at you

@Rabbie, welcome to Snowheads and good luck!
My dad would still be skiing at 75 if he was still with us. He never knew his last trip was to Bad Gastein in 2006, but we had a good time.

@Rabbie, have a fantastic time. I've never been to Borovets, but have heard good things - and anywhere with plenty of snow and ski lifts can't be bad. Let us all know how your trip went.

Nice thread, this. Having dodged a close swing from Mr Grim Reaper in March (he missed by around 2cm, apparently) I am, again, childishly excited by the prospect of another ski trip at the age of 66.
I was elated to find I am still insurable for a ski trip at a not-unreasonable cost and that the Docs say it is OK. I was told ten years ago by a friend that, even then, I skied every day as if it were my last.
Mountains, companionship, beauty, a sense of adventure. Do it while you can.

Um, I always treat every trip, every day, as if it was my last. Other approaches aren't really well thought through, in my humble opinion.
I'd always check where the good snow is and go there, preferably with a helicopter as I'd not want to waste time on lifts.
Age... Don Wildman's 83 or so and he still rides circles around almost all snowboarders you'll see in the back country. I'm older than most people, but fitter and slimmer than almost all of them... I don't think age is particularly important, unless you allow it to be.

About to take my first skiing holiday since 1989 at the age of 71. Wish me luck. For reasons of economy I have booked a week in Borovets which seems to be reasonably intermediate/beginner friendly. I am hoping that skiing is like riding a bike - once you know how you don't forget. I am always the optimist so perhaps reality will smack me in the face in a couple of weeks. |
Very much like riding a bike.
You do not forget but you get very rusty, your mind will remember the muscles will remember but the rust has limited their movement somewhat.
So take it easy find a few nice easy runs for the first day. Enjoy a nice lunch, chill out and just remember your back in the mountains so who cares about a bit of rust.

@Hurtle, Up or down? The three years that is! No, don't answer that. I didn't realise that you had had a brush with Mr G Reaper too. Gives you a very different perspective, doesn't it.

The Dolomites. After many years, skiing is getting less attractive for me - but the Dolomites still draw me. A great range of skiing, gorgeous - and friendly locals. And, of course, if like me, you go there as part of the preBB and BB set up, great company is assured. Not sure when I'll stop skiing - but when I do it will almost certainly be on completion of a BB.

Had a fantastic 20000 ft of pow skiing in 3 hours before taking off for the airport yesterday. If that was to be it that would't be bad. My ever expanding quiver would be slightly redundant though.

Yep, the surgeon said he wouldn't have to break open my chest again to replace it. He specialises in non (less!) invasive cardiac surgery.

Thanks for the advice. I have been working on my general fitness since this trip was planned but I have now stepped up on the squats. So far so good.
Thanks for all the encouraging advice

I saw David Bowie in Courchevel 1850 about 15 years ago. Wonder where he went for his last ski trip.
As for me I think a sedate cruise down to the Hospitzalm St Christoph where I'd eat and drink myself to death.

If it was this year? Whistler - mainly because I've only been once and it had distinctly underwhelming snow cover. This year it looks great, and I'm sure that would only boost the pretty nice vibe that was there last year.
I could also tick off some bucket list things like Heli-Skiing up in Alaska whilst I'm up that way...

Last Ski trip???? It doesn't bear thinking about.
Anywhere with my wife and some decent scenery, food and wine, but it'd have to be Italy.
But if I am a good boy, I'll open my own ski resort in heaven one day.
Ouch!

Quick halftime report. So far everything going well. Only problem that I find it harder work to get back up after a fall especially on the flat. Luckily not too many falls

@Rabbie, From my experience it WAS like riding a bike when I returned to the slopes in 2013 at the age of 50 for the first time since 1990. Took a few hours and a short lesson but having 7 or 8 previous trips through the 80's under my belt gave me enough experience to settle back into it. Gone each year since and we are off again at Easter to PDS and so glad I re-discovered this amazing way to holiday! My desire now is that although I can ski most runs safely, competently and enjoyably having learnt so long ago and having had no real depth of instruction since 1990 I would like my technique to improve. Good luck with finding your snow legs!
