Has anyone stayed and/or eaten in Brides-les-Bains in the last couple of years? I've stayed at both the Hotel des Sources and the Athena, which were adequate but this was a while back now. I also had an excellent meal at a restaurant which was attached to the Casino, but can't remember its name and again it was some time ago. Any up-to-date information on both hotels and restaurants would be welcome, happy to have a little walk to a resto. (It's just for one night, on the way to VT, I'd much rather stay in Brides than in Moutiers, which is rather a dump of a place imho.)

There's a great chambre d'hote in Villarlurin. http://www.latabledaurelie.fr. 5 mins from Brides on the Moutiers side! Aurelie makes great evening meals. Approx 60€ for an ensuite room inc breakfast.

(But I'll have to practise pronouncing the name of your village - I find it a real tongue-twister!)

@Hurtle, ….Altisvalvert works brilliantly. I have had great, cheap rooms and dinner there for one and two night trips. Drive along valley, park at hotel. Have dinner, sleep, have breakfast, walk 100m in canyoning shoes to the lift. Leave car at hotel - they are fine with parking in their car park. Get lift up valley to Meribel - great 40 min ride in beautiful valley - bung shoes in rucksack, ski all day in Trois Vallees…get last lift back to Brides - change at hotel. Drive back to Geneva. Simples.

@valais2, thanks, but this is just an overnight stop on the way to the EoSB.

Altisvalvert has been completely renovated recently too. @Hurtle, the key to our name is in the last two letters pronounced "an" not "in"!

@boredsurfin, yeah, my French isn't too bad (no talent on my part, I was just exposed to the language very early) but that name twists my tongue in a way it doesn't want to go!

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

Thought of you the other day, when on our snow factory tour there were two Russians, both spoke fluent French and English, humbled was I when they translated some of the technical phrases

@boredsurfin, I think it's becoming more and more difficult to motivate Brits to learn other languages, as English increasingly becomes the most popular international language. Sad.

@Hurtle, oops yes forgot French wasn't a problem for you. you're not alone with our village name, it seems to fall into the tongue twister category for lots of people. We should have moved to nearby Pussy or Ars much easier all round

My younger son's new GF had a German father, an Austrian mother and an English stepfather. Both biological parents were interpreters. She is bilingual in English and French, having been thrown into a French comprehensive school at 12 and worked some years in Paris as an adult. Has a good understanding of German, has learnt Spanish and is now learning Italian (because son has an Italian son).
I do find it very stimulating to be with somebody with such a cosmopolitan outlook (she is also a Trustee of a charity in India). They do seem to have a very solid relationship so hopefully she will be around to keep opening minds in the family for many years to come. Currently they are looking at a couple of years in Sweden and she's already researching whether a 3 months full time course would give her adequate fluency to work in a Swedish workplace.....
Off topic, sorry.....

Glad to hear Altisvalvert has been renovated. We used to stay there a lot late 90's but it went down and we stopped going there. I like Brides but now stay with family in Le Cruet when in 3V. We have had good meals in the Casino restaurant too.

Back to the drawing board...Aurelie doesn't have enough rooms and Altisvalvert won't take a booking for a single night. Any other suggestions for Brides, failing which I think it's back to Les Sources? At least I've found the website for the restaurant in the casino.

@Little Martin, a thought, thanks. Must say that we don't usually anticipate problems with single night bookings in that area so late in the season.
