@AthersT, @dublin2, thanks. We've now decided to stay at home, but the info is still useful for the future.

Two years ago early April flew to Nice and stayed in Auron one of the first resorts in the French Alps, lift pass special price €80 for week! could also ski Isola 2000. Bus from Nice that's goes by airport only a few euro! Accommodation self catering, loads of choice cheap. To get good value go out of tourist season. Also got half price lift pass Milky Way in April last week of season, had some great powder days.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Hitchhike to Scotland and sleep in a tent.
On a serious note I'd highly recommend going to Auron and Isola via Nice. They're popular with French weekenders but in the week you've almost got your own private ski resorts.

Got a little corporate help with this trip! Just came back this morning....
Friday: Eurostar sleeper train with ski kit- Freebie- thanks Eurostar!
Saturday:Arrive Bourg (arrive 06.20)
Buy 1 day Les Arcs lift pass
Catch 07.30 funicular --> Arc 1600
Breakfast
9am lift
12pm Lunch in Club Med (Peisey)- Freebie
1pm- back on the slopes
4.45pm- last lift!
6pm- dinner/drinks Club Med (Arc Extreme)- Freebie
Sunday- arrive St Pancras!
Sooooo for one full days skiing the price was......a one day lift pass!! Beat that
Next time there won't be so many freebies but reckon lowest cost is:
Friday- Eurostar out
Saturday- arrive Bourg-->funicular to Arc 1600 (no transfer costs)
ski the day and find accommodation for one night
Sunday- ski the day- arrange transfer for 5pm and catch late flight back with EJ from Geneva.

@cameronphillips2000, I'm not knocking Scotland, I have fond memories of learning to ski at at Nevis range.
However that does seem a very bold claim considering the recent dumps in the Alps.

@SAM@WORK, return flights from Turin to Stansted are not particularly helpfully timed though.
10:15 or 13:20 depending on which day you travel.

How can you take hand luggage only? Ski boots take up most of that

I really don't think so... Valais and Northern Alps Have significantly more snow (up to 3 m in the last week) than anywhere in the UK is likely to.
Skied some of the fluffiest powder I've seen (ever, including Canada heliskiing) around the Grand Massif yesterday.
