Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Is that lookers or skiers right

skiers left, or right off the lift. but it's going to be unstable next week if the snow that's forecast arrives so you'll need a guide etc

I love Pila, Spent at least 1 week there each year for last 4 years, and back there in 3 weeks time.
(also got married there 2 years ago on the slopes)

Pila does have some good off piste, if you know where to go.

As mentioned above you can go up couis 1, take magic carpet then cut off to the right (once you are heading down ) and you will be in a nice big section for off piste (BUT don't use if avalanche warning as this one can be a risk)

OR go up couis 2 and go right from the top of the chair and then when facing down hill go left and another big bowl.

If they open the 2 runs over far right on the piste map there is some great tree runs over there.

If you get a dump of snow, The bowls are great but if you like a run through the trees Pila is great for it!

I'm flying out 3 weeks today and staying self catering right next to the 2nd gondola.

Queued for an hour into Dover on Friday night and didn't get to F1 Balieul until 4am local time. Long drive on Saturday and arrived Aosta at 8pm. Late start this morning so had a hard time finding a space in the car park at the gondola. Rewarded with some fantastic snow and not at all busy considering. We skied straight onto most lifts. Natives are friendly.

@altis, Just you wait until tomorrow - my son will be up there causing chaos on his school ski trip! Look out for the "stack it" jackets.

Lots of interskibees about today but mostly confined to the lower slopes. Not busy at all. Straight onto most lifts and only 10 pax in cable car. Some Americans about but mostly Brits and Italians - probably in equal numbers. Great weather but cold (saw -11C) and excellent snow still. Fresh tracks to be had from Couis1 and the carpet. Apartment is about 5 mins from the gondola. There there are lockers for skis and boots - 32 euros for room for two for 6 days. Another great day.

Had a great week in Pila - what a gem!

Weather was just about perfect, snowstorms (3 separate ones) followed by sunny days and temperatures below zero except for a brief foehn on Saturday (-5 in morning became +10 in afternoon). Also the northerly aspect and great piste management meant the base was in super shape – we were talking on the plane home with someone who had been in the Milky Way and their base was poor and as soon as the temperature dropped they were skiing under snow cannons running full time (we didn’t see a single cannon blowing all weekin Pila).

Despite being Italian mid-term lift queues weren't too bad. And the pistes weren’t crowded either. As for off-piste, really quiet and we couldn't believe how long it took the powder to get tracked out!

We didn't get lessons in the end, just played in the conditions and had a ball. When the Couis lifts were open (2 more often than 1, but both were closed two of the days) we spent more of our time on Couis 2 – for some reason it matched our abilities/preferences more than Couis 1. The bowl on skiers left was plenty difficult enough for the stage we’re at and we also found some great pitches under the lift.

When the Couis lifts were closed we found the area around Nuova had some nice short powder stretches and again took some time to get tracked out. These were also good for warming up and had the advantage of a short and fast lift, so more time skiing than lifting.

Someone else pointed out the 3 euro Prosecco – so we thought it’d be rude not to! And in general costs here were lower than French or Austrian equivalents.

For someone of our abilities, starting to explore off-piste and powder, Pila turned out to be a fabulous destination.

Much warmer today with heavy cloud about. Snow definitely heavier. Saw the remains of a couple of small avalanches that weren't there yesterday. More light falling snow by 11 and proper textbook 6-point stars by about two. Busy lower down but very quiet up the mountain - possibly because of the very flat light up there. Still plenty of pockets of untracked.
Just after we had decided to go round again some time before 4pm, my inside ski was ripped away and I had a forward twisting fall. Left knee got tweaked so we decided to go down after all. It felt okay at the time but it's defo sore now. Might have to skip tomorrow - decide in the morning.

Surprisingly quiet for a British half term too. Apparently Interski have around 900 school children in resort...not much sign of them. A bit early I guess for the higher slopes. Off to Courmayer tomorrow for the day Very Happy

So glad you enjoyed it all, and found the skiing you wanted. Prosecco and nibbles a definite highlight for us.

Well my ACL is defo strained if not a little torn so no skiing today or for the rest of the week. Did the touristy bit around Aosta instead. Lots of Roman ruins, all a bit delapidated and some posh shops in the pedestrian zone. Weather up the hill looked very cloudy.
