Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Hi, so I recently purchased some Marker Barons and had them mounted on some K2 Annex skis - however, this was online, so they didn't have my (standard alpine) boots to check against. I then tried them out at the snow dome, where some kind but perhaps not completely familiar rental technician person adjusted them so my boots fit. However, when I got home and did some reading up, the forward pressure screws were too loose, so I have done the following things:

1) Adjusted the forward pressure so the screw is flush when the boot is clicked in;
2) Checked the AFD thingy is such that if I put a Christmas card envelope between the boot and the plate, I can pull it out, but it is a bit tricky.

Does this sound about right? I will probably take it to a technician in the resort in a few weeks anyway, but I'd quite like to know how to do it myself also.

Thank 'ee kindly for any responses,

Martin

I last had Barons 5 years ago, and the flush forward pressure screw with the boot mounted, is what I was told was correct.

The Barons AFD is designed to move even with pressure on it, so a very small gap should be fine.

 Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Forward pressure screw flush when the boot is installed.

The correct toe height gap is 0.5mm. If you haven't got a 0.5mm shim/feeler gauge then use a business card (my business cards are printed on 0.5mm card just for this purpose Cool) which will be thicker than an envelope. In reality when skiing you're standing on the AFD and the 0.5mm gap is between the top of the toe lug of the boot & the underside of the toe wings on the binding. For this reason, prior to measuring the gap you need to lever the cuff of the boot backwards to ensure that the top of the toe lug is snug up against the wings - this is particularly important on the Duke/Baron/Jester/Griffon bindings as they run a high level of forward pressure.
