Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

St Anton downhill

I notice that the women's downhill and super g scheduled for St. Anton Jan 9/10th has been switched to Altenmarkt on those dates and is being run as two short course runs. I presume this is snow related but the course at St. Anton from Kapall looks complete and re-scheduling as a double short course elsewhere is puzzling. Couldn't St. Anton run it that way?

It is said that the security zones (for racers falling etc.) along the Kapall-course are not safe enough due to lacking (artificial) snow. The two short races in Zauchensee are probably due to the fact that they can't offer a long Downhill run anyway, only SuperG. (but not sure on that)
Rumours in Alpinforum.com also suggest that St.Anton is not really interested anymore anyway since they lost the Austrian candidacy for the WC2023 to Saalbach last summer, on partly contested reasons (e.g. not allowing a combined St.Anton-Lech candidacy, because Lech is not in Tyrol)

As above really, there has to be a minimum depth of snow, not just along the course itself, but also to the sides of it.

@Langerzug, Altenmarkt alternates with Bad Kleinkirchheim and St Anton on a 3-year cycle to run full Downhills and Super-Gs for the Women's World Cup races and has done for at least 20+ years now. The plan at the moment is for a shortened 2-run Sprint DH because that is the course that has already agreed for the Europa Cup races that are taking place in the week following the 9th/10th January and that they have already started to prepare for. The higher start is not covered with artificial snow because it is not part of the normal pisted area. The next section is too flat for a race start so they have chosen to use the Gämskogel Start. The St Anton races were moved mainly because the lower sections of the Kapell course could not be guaranteed to be wide enough nor complete enough for the race and the training runs to be carried out safely.

As for the rumour kitchen, just let it brödel! rolling eyes

@davidthornton, They are using the lower alternative Super-G start because that is fully covered with snow (mostly artificial) and is ready to be race pisted. The netting and safety barriers are already being prepared and will start to go up as of Friday afternoon of this week, giving them 4/5 days to make the course ready for the training runs on the Thursday and Friday of the following week. The World Cup circus was coming into town any way for the Flachau night slalom on Jan 12th, so the addition of the DH and Super-G does not really make much difference to the area. However it will improve the occupancy rates for that particular week in Zauchensee (where the race actually takes place!)

@Samerberg Sue, thanks!
By the way, I don't think it is a bad thing Arlberg is not getting the WC2023. I think the Austrians are greatly overrating the marketing returns of these kind of events. The average tourist does'nt give a s... about alpine racing, whilst it is the average tourist that brings the money....
