Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Skimium Equipment Hire Insurance - Good Value?

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hired 3 sets of equipment from Skimium, Arc 1600. Given thin snow cover, decided to take their extra insurance, 12 e per week per set. Significant gouge on one ski on day 1, right under binding. Despite pushing hard, told NO, insurance does NOT cover damage. It only covers THEFT and if the equipment BREAKS. Not impressed. Had to pay to get ski repaired. Will pursue on return to UK but feeling ripped off. Not cynical enough to bend it over a rock and say 'there, now it's broken'.Tempting though!

Have a look at your skiing insurance policy to see if it covers damage to equipment.

Even the ones that do cover damage have a fairly insane excess on them these days, on most of the trips I repped we would warn clients about this on arrival but they would ignore it. Its from 20%-60% in some cases of the skis retail value, not the trade price the shop paid for it. Two of my reps even got stung with a 300 Euro excess on some Head Supershapes that got stolen during Apres.

TBH esp when the snow is bad your far better off having a pair of your own rock skis, its what I do. I picked up some MX88's for £100 off ebay ex hire. Even with the cost of equipment travel its less than hiring let alone paying if they get buggered.

The ski shop insurance? Or personal snow sport insurance?

Heres the excess / value pay out from my personal insurance. It does cover;loss, theft and damage but with a fair few caveats such as used in manner for which it wasn't designed (i.e. hitting rocks).

How old is the equipment? How much will you get back?
Up to 12 months old 90% of the price you paid
Up to 24 months old 70% of the price you paid
Up to 36 months old 50% of the price you paid
Up to 48 months old 30% of the price you paid
Up to 60 months old 20% of the price you paid
Over 60 months old Nothing

The ski shop ones excess's I've found vary between company and country, but its usually between 20-40% off RRP. In some cases its 60% if its a premium rental, which the RRP can be up to and over 1000 Euros as don't forget they also count the cost of bindings not just the skis, I've heard of a few folk on other trips being left with bills of 600 euros for damage to rented race stock.

My advice is always hire and pay for the hire insurance on your credit card. Some ski shops will try and pull a fast one with damage charges when it all it needs is the service it would get anyway, but on a credit card you have protected purchases so they are legally obliged to fit the payment if they play silly bugs.

I'd have thought that if you were skiing on officially open pistes then that is fair wear and tear.
the hire shop in resort is hiring you skis to ski in their resort, they know the prevalent conditions and if they deem them unsuitable for skis they should not let them out the door.
bit of a money maker for the shops , I think

In a fair world you would be correct but since the hire shops exist to make money they make it in anyway they can. (devils advocate mode) they would argue if you ski into a rock at the start of the season it would not be unexpected due to a lower snow base and a risk you should accept, they would also argue its not their decision to open the piste but yours to hire. Which obviously isn't fair but they don't work on that level.

The one to make a fuss over is failure over damage, a lot of the time shops will try and get you to pay for a warrantable failure, all hire equipment has to be indemnified and a lot of the new items will have a warranty as most manufacturers make specialist hire kit these days and do 'hire' versions (thicker bases, thicker edges and other things) of their normal offerings, e.g. Volkl do a hire versions of the Katana, which will differ from the shop versions. The hire kit carries a warranty too but its more hassle for the shop to sort it with the company so they try and get it out of the customers as it makes them more money.

Thanks all for your comments and information. Having read the ski hire insurance policy it is supposed to cover damage. Of course, they hope the insured will give up, faced with time wasting obstacles. I will pursue it on principle, even though for 25e it may not be worth the time spent. Thanks again and buyers beware!

To be fair to the guys in the Skimium shop in Arcs 1600, they’ve given a very good service overall this week. Very friendly and committed to meeting our equipment needs. Despite disappointment with ski insurance, I would definitely give my custom again.
