After fitting chains in a layby, how far should I drive before stopping to retighten?

Never had this problem. Invest in a set of self tightening chains. Well worth the extra, you only get wet kneeling in the snow once!
Dont forget to refer to the manual if you have ABS, it may need switching off.

I only move my car 20-30 ft or so, in my experience that gives enough time for chains to settle and then I take up any slack. You don't get wet knees if you kneel on a small rubber mat or equivalent.

fraserp, i was told by the people whi sold me mine (Roofbox company) it was the traction control that needed switching off, not the ABS

How tight should they be? Mine have these rubber thingies that you stretch across to fit them. They dont seem VERY tight to me
