Acquiring 'soft skills' to put on his CV.
My sons #1 and #2 did back to back cooking in the mountains and dinghy instructing in France. They liked the summers just as much as the winters.

Absolutely. If he's one of those rare people who can actually cook properly on a boat under way he won't have any problems getting jobs. Yachtmasters are two a penny compared to proper sea cooks but someone who can cook AND be a watch keeper should be able to pick and choose his berths.
My son (who's no sailor) was invited by a Portuguese family he cooked for in Val d'Isere (and liked very much) to cook for them the following summer in their villa in Sardinia, but unfortunately he was doing his Ph D by then.

Scott Dunn is far from the top end. The top end is just fabulously ridiculously expensive. |
'Tis subjective as to what one would class as 'top end' but my reference was in relation to that within ones 'reasonable budget'. My response was purely in respect to an expected budget for a 'typical' chalet holiday... not an unlimited budget.

We've been with some main stream operators: Meriski, VIP, Power White and Ski Total. Unfortunately, as with all chalet experiences it depends on the chef in the season you go. For example, we had one great experience with Meriski and went back twice (to be disappointed and have given up). Our best chalet experiences have been with independently run outfits: Alpshack in Montchavin les Coches and Chilli Powder at the bottom of the Avoriaz cable car.

@prthomas, I would recommend www.come-ski.com they have a very high food standard, and the house wine is well above average, I do know these guys as my son worked for them for a few seasons 2 years ago, so I know the food ethos and also the budgets which on food and wine is very high. However their chalet prices out of the peaks weeks are very reasonable I think for what you get.

@livetoski, look pretty good, but one thing that jumped out on their website (and unrelated to original OP's question) was
Insurance:
It is now a legal requirement that all guests are fully insured for their skiing holidays, this must include:
• Mountain Rescue
• 3rd Party Liability
• Off Piste Activity
Is that the case now?

@ansta1, good question I am not sure if its a legal requirement in France, it could well be for non EEA people

We were very happy with Le Ski - went with them twice to La Tania when our daughter was small. Have since been roughing it (in comparison) with Esprit

A vote for Chalet La Luge, La Tzoumaz - 4 Valleys. Been twice. Lovely spacious, comfortable chalet, good food and fabulous views. Found the skiing to be much less busy at Feb 1/2 term than the big French resorts.

Thank you Karen for the mention. Hope you all have great skiing this winter wherever you go.
They are going to start opening some of the pistes here in La Tzoumaz at the weekend . We have skinned up a couple of times already which is just amazing with fresh snow, sunshine and no one around.
If anyone is looking for a ski holiday we are offering a 10% to all Snowheads on all of our available dates at our catered chalet, Chalet La Luge, that includes Christmas week.

Great seeing the shoutouts for VIP Ski. We're going with them to Morzine for the first time in January

Hi Peter, which dates are your family looking to book up? Do you have a preference of resort? We are listed on Canopy&Stars, which is part of the Sawday's family. Other great companies we work with are Independent Mountain and CamelSnow. We own and run a unique catered eco chalet (with outdoor hot tub) in the Portes du Soleil, take a look at our website too as well as the companies I mentioned before (www.chalet-chatelet.com), I think we can offer exactly what you and your family are looking for!

You didn't say WHERE you wanted to go.? Having worked for the last 10 winters for several TO's, it is obvious some are better than others and everyone's opinions will vary depending on their own particular experience. From a season workers viewpoint, there is very little difference between the major TO's. IE Total, Inghams, Esprit (ALL now part of Hotelplan), so subject to the same management dictates, Nielson, Skiworld, Crystal. All much the same. A "cut above is SUPERTRAVEL, Scott Dunn, Powder White & Powder Byrne. In France THE ALPINE CLUB has three magnificent chalets in ST Martin De Bellville, (3V), and as someone else said, Bramble Ski, but take out a large mortgage!!

VIP SKI in Morzine have been excellent for us two years in a row (which is more than can be said for the snow...).
Looking to squeeze in another trip this year and they are pretty fully booked so good to see the recommendations above - thanks.

More Mountain and SilverSki come to mind. Our MoreMountain chalet in Morzine in 2014 had outdoor hottub with friendly bar service from the lovely couple who ran it, slap bang in the middle of Morzine, excellent food, decent vino, boot driers, everything really. My last SilverSki chalet (LaPlagne) had a proper cordon bleu ex michelin star trained chef! He was making his own sundried tomatoes as he didn't rate the ones he could get in the resort.

we used meribel ski chalets and stayed in la petite silene. they only have a few chalets but i couldn't recommend enough, chalet was great, food the best i have had in a chalet (fresh meat from the butchers next door purchased daily and chef/cook would check you were happy with the menu the day before and accommodate any preferences etc).
also used more mountain last year but self catered apartment/chalet - good experience with them also.

@prthomas, we pretty much only do chalet holidays, and have moved up a bit from the basic, our suggestions would be Powder White, More Alps, Adventure Base and Ski World we have been on several holidays with them and have moved up to their better chalets and been pleased, I would also recommend Alpine Answers the specialist travel agency who we have used on several occasions to help guide us, they helped in discovering several of the above.

We've just come back from a Silver Ski chalet in La Plagne, and I'd say it was okay but not any better than all the others... the evening meal was lovely but, to be honest, the breakfast was terrible... no cheese, no meat, no yoghurts... just a choice of cereal and the same old boiled or scrambled eggs and bread and jam every day... We only had croissants on the last morning because they'd been left out for our early start for the airport transfer but we couldn't have orange juice that morning! Another strange thing was that there was no choice or advance notice of what was for the evening meal... so if you didn't like it I don't know what they would have done... fortunately our team can eat anything.
I know that the standard of breakfast is not the major decider in choosing a skiing chalet... but it does make you wonder why do they need to scrimp on breakfast?
You also have to take your own bath towels... again who knows why?
Great ski in - ski out location, lovely staff and fantastic snow....
