Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Do we have any first hand reports? I wonder hoe deep the artificial is? I've watched people skiing on good artificial snow this morning, in France, but it's not deep enough everywhere to withstand ten days of intense traffic and intense heat.

30cm of artificial is allegedly far more robust than the same depth of natural when compacted. Temps are lower in the Dollies than the Alps, hence the extensive snow production.

What do I care? The more peeps crammed into VT and Tignes, the more of the current 507km of open piste around the Sella Ronda area my mates and I get to enjoy to ourselves. Very Happy

The Eurosport coverage also showed people doing recreational skiing, so it isn't just the race track that has snow.

we skied it on teh way back from Ortesei at the BB last year. We had lifts to catch to get back form Arabba. We absolutely caned it down. I'm not sure what today's winning time was but I reckon we did it in about five minute... wink

@cameronphillips2000,

The Sasslong WC gate is at the rear of the Ciampinoi lift station. My legs wont allow me to ski it in one, it's something like 5km. A very good skier could probably ski it in 3/4mins.
The WC lads are around 1min 50 secs, getting 8m of air and 60-70m of carry off of the camel humps. Shocked Shocked

We'd been out from Arabba to Ortesei and then legs were a bit weak after the 10K James Bond run.

We had a debate as whether or not to do it on the way back as it's going back in ourselves. We decided to do it. We weren't racing but did it fairly swiftly and in one go. I seem to remember there's a red and a black sasslong and we did the black thinking it might be quicker. It's a wonderful run.

@cameronphillips2000,

When the top section (back of Ciampinoi) ends and it becomes the Sasslong proper, there's a left or right split. Left is Sasslong A, the WC course, right is Sasslong B, which is a more gentle red which feeds back on to A just above it's conclusion in St. Christina.

For those who have not skied the Sasslong, don't be put off by it being graded black. Most of the run is so wide that you can use the width to take it easy.

You need massive kahunas to ski the thing straight however! Very Happy

I don't think I'd ever ski much straight these days as there are just too many other skiers about to consider. You are right about it being not particularly steep difficult. It is north facing and in the trees though so gets sporadic sun and conditions were quite variable troughout the run. It would be interesting to see which world cup/Olypmic runs others have skied and how tricky they are. The only other I've skied is the Olympic downhill at Whistler which is quite tame really. Obviuosly the Hannenkahn is the hardets at race speed but I don't know if it's easier to amble on down. I've skied the Luc Alphond downhill at Serre Che a few times and found the bottom steep section very very hard in sheet ice. It was complete carnage at the end of the day.

A pal and I (both late 40s), skied the Sasslong the day after it had reopened post WC race. The whole thing was icey, apparently they actually hose it with water to create ice for extra speed. Confused The last narrow section coming into St. Christina was sheet ice, we couldn't hold an edge for love nor money and ended up pelting it straight. Our Wives were watching from the bottom and were questioning whether it was actually us as they'd never seen either of us ski so poorly. Very Happy

My Wife has a video of it which she threatens me with occasionally. Confused

The Austrian SKi Academy is based in st Chritoph, St Anton. Their team had been training up on Rendly one monringn and we decided to ski if when they'd finished. IT was sheet ice nad had obviously been watered. As we struggled to make it down the locals were looking on with an expression of 'why?'
