Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Voss or Geilo?

OK, flying to Bergen. Will have car and loads of time. We'll be doing a bit of XC, a bit of downhill and a bit of other unplanned scenic wintery stuff conflated with drunken parlour games. Got self catering accommodation choices in both Voss and Geilo. If you have been to both what would you go for? Clearly Voss is nearer but is Geilo worth the extra drive?

Assuming you can get past Finse in the car I would choose Geilo (Lilledomarco might have more advice on this). Voss can get some very heavy snow fall, but Geilo stays colder even if you get a southwesterly gale.

No doubt, I would go to Voss. Geilo is one of the worst places for downhill in all over Norway, although the XC options are superior there. If little snow i Voss, you can go to Myrkdalen (just 25 min drive from Voss) where you are guaranteed snow. Btw, you can not drive to Finse. Only train goes there. If going to Geilo you will have to pass the high mountain, which close down a lot of times during the winter (you will then have to drive other mountain passes that can take a long time). If you are not an experienced winter driver it can be difficult. But if the weather is nice, it is a really scenic drive on the mountain platou. Geilo also maybe feels a little bit more like being in the mountains compared to Voss. But the possibilities you have at Voss are better. There are good XC possibilities there, the town is larger and you have to ski resorts that are both some of Norway's best.

Geilo is great for both. People we went with had been to Voss (once) and preferred Geilo (4 visits). Only driven there from Oslo same distance but no hassle and that was a 2 wheel drive Volvo. We arrived at the Airport Ryan air calls Oslo and went over the mountains on the way there with no problems, back on the main road which was cleared tarmac. That was in Feb.

I did a school trip to Geilo in 1963..... we all loved it, but then we had nothing to compare it to, and we were all beginners. And we all fell in love with Hans, the instructor. Little Angel

@pam w, I'll ask around for Hans. "Hey Hans, turn your hearing aid up, do you remember Pam from Chichester Harbour. 1963 Hans, Hans wake up."

That said, been doing my homework and I prefer the look of Voss (and Myrkdalen up the road), and the cabin I've scouted out looks best and my gang have basically said "whatever, how much is booze in the supermarket?" And the drive is shorter and less risky if the weather turns iffy. So, Voss baby yeah.
