Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Graham Bell - Camera man

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Watched Ski Sunday yesterday and every week I marvel at the camera control that Graham Bell displays when he does the downhill run. Not only does he manage to give us some great commentary but he even has the time to turn the camera on himself!
Is he using a special no wobble camera?

When I tried something similar with my camcorder the picture was all over the place and I just didn’t get the same type of view that Graham manages to get.

BOD, Sunday's run was spliced from two runs and it looked like two different cameras. I'm wondering if he didn't have a little oops Twisted Evil

But so far he hasn'r 'fessed up wink

I was lent a BBC mini cam a while back. It was very small (but pretty heavy) and had the most amazing anti-shake system - hand held stuff looked like it was shot from a tripod. Didn't see yesterday's run but downhill runs aren't like the kind of piste you were probably skiing on. On pistes everyone turns in different places so you get tons of undulation even if it looks fairly flat. Downhill piste on practice days (when he does it) would be like a millpond in comparison plus he, and the planks he's on, are smooth at high speed.

JohnHill, most good DV mini cams have superb optical anti shake systems and there are some small 'steady cam) appliances on the market, but I'd say it's Mr. Bell's skiing ability that makes it look a dam sight smoother than it really is. The guys in the race weren't having too easy a time of it Shocked

Come on Graham, give us the real poop, did you spend a bit of our licence fee on a new cam? (one of the few times I woldn't call it a waste of money) snowHead

Doesn't Graham Bell handhold one camera and have one strapped to a ski boot?

rob@rar.org.uk, re-watched the footage, you're right some of it is from an angle that shows the ski tips and a shadow shows him hilding a little camera. I'd like to know what camera it is.

It was amazing watching that run and comparing it to the game that a few of us have been playing. The computer run is really accurate!!! I could tell each corner and my best time on the computer was 1:58 which i think was close to the wining time?

I had a quick glimpse of it when he did his run at Val d'Isere. It/they didn't look any bigger than a domestic camcorder, maybe a Sony Handicam in DVCAM format rather than miniDV.

Word of advice.
A few years ago I fell at speed with a camera. I received some quite serious brusing to my chest & was severely winded enough to warrant medical attention.

Leave it to the Pros.

Terrific work from Graham Bell from Wengen on Ski Sunday today; probably the best on-piste action I've seen him do.

To answer Masque's question, he uses a Sony miniDV camcorder with a wideangle lens, plus another camera (I couldn't quite make out what kind) attached to his right ski boot. The camcorder he holds looks like an old Sony PC6:

I assume Martin has/is reading this, can he persuade Graham to pop on this thread and say hello and tell us all about it, great footage from Wengen today Very Happy

Greg

I met the other cameraman, the one who filmed Graham, he skis backwards with a full sized camera on his shoulder to get the pictures of Graham, now thats impressive, by the way Graham had already left Wengen before the race on Saturday, I think he filmed his run on Practise day (Thursday) or possibly Friday before the Combined
