Not a huge difference between ESF and ESI overall. Both are ski schools with a presence in many different French ski resorts, ESF just about everywhere, ESI not as many resorts but still a big operation. ESI may have more of an international clientele, but that depends very much on the profile of the visitors to that particular resort. If tuition in English is important to you make sure you make that clear when you book. The actual experience on the hill will be similar - any variation in this is much more likely to be due to the instructor you are allocated rather than any difference between the ski schools themselves.

Having been to Font Romeu can't imagine lessons in English are that common.

@shimself, I went to Font Romeu on one of my early ski trips, it's a lovely little resort. I don't think there is a lot of difference between ESF and ESI. If you are going during a busy time make sure to book lessons - I went to Font Romeu at New Year, we didn't book and so we didn't get! I doubt group lessons will be in English but both schools will have instructors that speak English, so you could ask at least to make sure to get an English speaking instructor (unless of course you speak French). Something else you could check is the max group sizes - if they are different, go for the smaller one  .

Difference generally between the two is in class size for group lessons. ESI have smaller groups, generally 6 or 8 depending on age. ESF can have 12 or more.

If you have choice between 2 go for ESI. Probably less variability in instructor quality.

I get the impression that ESI schools are more flexible in approach compared to the centrally prescribed ESF approach. Both have their advantages.
That difference was explained to me by an ESI instructor. They,d had a visiting Canadian instructor the previous season and he said there'd been some fruitful learning between instructors with different backgrounds and he'd enjoyed the exchanges. Maybe ESF would be less likely to see things that way but moving from resort to resort it's possibly easier to know exactly what level to slot yourself in with ESF.

Side note if it is running try and go on the yellow train the views are great. It goes pretty much past Font Romeu. Starts close to Villefranche-de-Conflent (worth an hour or two ) and finishes at Latour-de-Carol.
