There was a marked inversion today. It was warmer at the top of the Grande Motte at 3000m than at Tignes Le Lac and Bourg Saint Maurice was colder again.

@mountainaddict, enjoy! Very jealous. You can get within 10m of skiing to middle station but best snow is much higher. Check out the progress of the new cable car lift too.

horgand, sorry to be a kill-joy, but the consensus seems to be that El Nino had minimal impact on European weather.
Met Office News Blog
Arrival of interesting swans, or amount of fruit on the trees probably just as accurate.

I think it's a little bit darker now than at 17:32 last year. Must be El Nino

Nothing to do with El Nino, @clarky999. It's the earth's axial tilt. Earth's obliquity oscillates between 22.1 and 24.5 degrees on a 41,000-year cycle. It is currently 23.44 degrees and decreasing. So nothing stays the same, see?

But that's the wrong way around. If obliquity is decreasing then the tendency is towards equinoctial so winter sunset would get later.
Splendid word,obliquity. Thank you.

Really warm in Tignes today. The snow on the glacier was like March/April snow in Le Lac

The Earths axial tilt also varies on much shorter time-scales according to the 18.6 year Lunar cycle. However, the amount is much smaller than the 41,000 year Obliquity cycle (0.0025 degrees compared to 2.46 degrees). Should you ever be interested in that kind of detail!

Last xmas was a marketing train wreck for the Alps - hoping it won't be the same again.

@Piste View, people have short memories. even if, say (and I hope not) Xmas was as poor and NY as good, in 3 years it'll have been forgotten.

@under a new name, sat with one of the head guys of a leading UK tour op in the last few weeks. He described the ski market as on its knees. Multiple reasons for this but snowless peaks last xmas was a body blow according to my contact. I personally think we need to desperately hope for action in Paris rather than hazy memories.

@Piste View, interesting. maybe the UK market? CdA/CdMB certainly spening enough capital around Cham and on a personal level our rentals across the season are strong.

Well, with all the speculation about no snow, doom, and gloom, and that big bad El Nino lurking around in the Alps this time of year, it seems it could create some good last minute deals for those with the nerve and patience to pull the trigger when the snow does start to fall.

No intention of going this New Year (for the first time in ages due to the weekend being so close to Christmas and daughter breaking her leg) but reading the post above about the skiing industry being on its knees I had a quick look at the Crystal website and there is heavy discounting going on - New Year week in Les Arcs in hotel price reduced by 32% and actually cheaper than the week I am going to the same hotel in late January (although we had a good group deal). So they must be struggling to sell the holidays. I do wonder if travelling on Boxing Day has put a few people off this year, and the unreliable snow after last year's chaos in France?

I spent over a month in the Alps Oct/Nov and there was loads of building going on everywhere. Lots of swish looking individual chalets as well as apartments. So UK tour operators might be struggling but there's a lot of investment going in.

Or speculation, new buildings are not always a harbinger of economic health.

A lot of the building round my way looks like high end individual dwellings being built to order. Very nice, proper construction in wood, not the "build it in concrete then slap on some pine and call it Savoyarde" style. (I am familiar with the latter as my MGM apartment is a prime example)

It may be November and it definitely is tropical (15 degrees today) BUT talking to our new neighbour today who is the ESF director for Chantemerle, he said they are already making snow there in preparation for the season pre-opening on the 28/29 November
