Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Are French ski hire techs too casual?

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Just got back from a great week in Les Arcs. snowHead snowHead

Hired skis from one of the SkiSet shops and two different ski techs forgot to adjust the boot and binding settings on both of my daughter's and my own skis. I noticed at the time that the tech placed my boot into the same ski twice rather than the other and pointed this out. We didn't notice my 6 year old daughters other ski hadn't been set until she was trying to click her boot into the bindings and it just wouldn't fit. In both cases the boots didn't fit, but if the fit was "close enough" then would we have noticed that the bindings and DIN settings would have been set incorrectly? I realise that they are probably very experienced, but the "lick your finger and stick it in the wind" approach can be slightly disconcerting.
In contrast all ski hire shops I've used in Austria have insisted on signed written details, age, height, weight, ability before setting bindings usually with the assistance of their computerised inventory system.

On a side note, my sister bought a pair of K2 'Lotta Luv' form the very helpful Sport 2000 in Chantel after enduring a few days of ski testing with a surly to$$er in one of the Inter Sport outlets who obviously could not be ar$ed to get a sale. Puzzled

No, just the crap ones.

The shop I use (when I use a shop) is really rather better than that. (Francois Baud Sports, Morzine)

Hywel, Only the bad shops and bad techs. Next time look for a small independent shop not a chain with an inbuilt client base. If a shop doesn't measure your feet for your boots then demand your money back(if you've paid in advance) and find one that does.

My mate in AdH got given hire boots in different sizes (wrongly labelled) - one wouldn't fit in the binding when he got to the slope hehehe

So you've used one hire shop in one French resort compared to lots in Austria. Not enough to start claiming that French shops are rubbish, is it?

In Defence of the French, just got back from Puy St Vincent,on the last day my 14yr son went off-piste,took a tumble and managed to loose a ski, after 20 mins of searching couldn't fined the blasted thing!.

After a trek down the mountain,we reported the loss to our rep who escorted us to the ski hire shop telling us we'd probably have to pay for it,after a few mins discussion the owner/manager shrugged his shoulders and told us not to worry.he wouldn't want it to spoil our holiday and that we didn't need to pay anything!

LIAMJ, They find them all at the end of the season and give the to the appropriate shops usually - hence the extensive use of labels on skis/poles

stevo_the_saddler, still a nice attitude though, the shop has lost the best part of a season's rental income.

Lizzard there's no need to impune Hywel, especially considering the content of his post and the following thread implies nothing of the kind that you want to imply.

Personally, I had no problem with SkiSet in Belle Plagne last season. Or any other French resort, but the most lackadaisical approach to binding setting I've had was from an independent in Grindelwald. So as far as I'm concerned no Alpine nation's inherently any worse at giving crap hire service - yer takes yer chances, or seeks recommendations.

My post title was a question "Are French ski hire techs too casual" rather than a statement. I related my experience where two potentially dangerous errors were noted. Where did I say that I'd used "one hire shop in in one French resort compared to lots in Austria" Puzzled I've actually used more ski hire shops in France than Austria and I still maintain that in my experience, the Austrian shops have always been more diligent both in measuring feet and checking personal details. Ski set definitely didn't offer to measure my children's feet (I use my own boots). I think I will take Easiski's advice and avoid the big outlets and try some recommended small independant ones in future.
