Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Driving to Chamrousse

Hi, we are considering driving to Chamrousse in February next year as a cheaper option to the ridiculous half term flight costs! We are a little nervous about snow / driving conditions. Will we need winter tyres / snow chains? Is it better to get the ski train and if so, where (and how easy is it) do we get a transfer from Grenoble station to Chamrousse from? Any advice appreciated. Thanks.

You'll need to have snow chains in the boot to get to Chamrousse. The road is frequently tricky in the winter.

Buses run from Grenoble railway station.

@annaI, Oddly my first thoughts on driving to Chamrousse were - oh no Grenoble traffic. There are plenty of trains each day from Paris to Grenoble, but most require a change in Lyon.

I think you can get Eurostar as far as Lyon now also.

Having driven up the main road towards IKEA etc several times in the last few months I was surprised how close to Grenoble Chamrousse is. Will have to try a day trip this winter.

@annaI, I would see if there are any tickets left on the direct Eurostar to Lyon and change for Grenoble there (if there is a connection).

If you decide to drive I can't advise on the roads near that resort as I haven't yet been there. However I think the winter tyres are a worthwhile investment. They are supposed to perform better not just in snow but in rain at temps of 9 degrees or less.

If you haven't already booked accommodation have a look at Peak Retreats as they offer self drive packages incl Eurotunnel to Chamrousse. We have also booked train travel through them before so they might be able to procure you some tickets for the Eurostar to Lyon.
