Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Tech binding compatible alpine boots

 Poster: A snowHead

I'm after some new boots and thinking of potentially going to tech bindings in the future. I've used some Black Diamond touring boots before and didn't like really get on with them. They just didn't feel very solid, the cuff seemed really low and they just didn't seem to offer much support. Because of that, I was looking more towards something like a normal alpine boot that has tech binding compatibility rather than an out and out touring boot.

Essentially it comes down to wanting to be able to tour but with significantly more focus on the downs than the ups. Has anyone got any suggestions of options to look into? Obviously fit is key but just looking to get some sort of initial list of possibilities. Having a quick skim through some sites, it seems like Dalbello, K2 and Dynafit all offer something along these lines but are there any other options that people know of? Thanks

Lots of options available these days : Technica Cochise is what I ski, soles are swappable very easily between Alpine and Tech. Many others as well.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

I've had the Atomic Waymaker Tour 110 for 2 seasons now. At 1600g it is light enough to tour, but also had swappable sole plates, for Dynafit or alpine.

K2 have the only boot comparable without needing to change out soles. Otherwise Technica, Salomon, Atomic, Scarpa, Dalbello all have Hybrid boots with differing systems that fit the brief.

K2 Pinnacle is the only boot that will fit in both normal alpine bindings and tech bindings without changing soles.

If you don't need them to fit in normal alpine bindings - or if you use frame touring bindings or Marker Lords/Salomon Wardens on other skis - then most brands have downhill orientated 'freeride touring' boots. I've had Technica Cochise 120 and now use the Cochise Pro Light, which I like a lot.
