Poster: A snowHead
|
It's a mate of mine's 50th birthday and he's keen on skiing Italy. We're going to do 2 weeks from 19th March, either at the same resort or 2 centre trip.
The first week is adults only, probably in a hotel. Kids will be joining us for the second week in a chalet/apartment (they're all 15 - 19 and in school/uni) Everyone in the group is good on piste with 15+ weeks each and some of us like to venture off-piste.
We've been to all the major Italian resorts but never so late. We're driving so transfer to other resorts for the 2nd week is not a problem.
Any suggestions? Maybe a week in Italy followed by a week in France or Austria.

Cervinia and Zermatt week 1 and then drive to any of Tignes/Val d'Isere, three valleys or Morzine/Avioraz.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

I'm doing the opposite.
A week in a hotel at Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis, Austria with 7 year old nephew.
From 26 March road tripping southern Austrian Tirol into Italy for a week finding the best snow.
I like lower key resorts so depending on snow
Nauders, Hoch Imst (AT)
Samnaun into Ischgl (CH to AT)
Solda, Livigno, Bormio (IT)
and then down to Milan to fly home

In and out of Samnaun.

Been talking about a week in the Milky Way followed by a week in Serre Che. How do these two areas rate for late season snow?

I've skied bluebird knee deep powder at Montgenevre on 27 April.
Not sure how consistent that is though.

Knee-deep in the last week of March will do!
I've searched (but not too hard) for historical snow records but stats seem a little thin. Am I worrying a bit too much?

There's some RAD backcountry accessible from Hoch Imst.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

Unless you are looking for slush, late March is not a good time for 90% of the Dolomites and Italian Alps

Are temp's in the Southern Alps that much higher? Sauze, Sestriere, Claviere and Montgenevre are all above 1600m and have mainly N or NW facing slopes so should not suffer form slush anymore than, say, the 3 valleys for example.
