Italian police have been unable to identify the body of a skier found in 2005 on the Valtrounenche glacier

The file has recently been entrusted to the Turin Scientific Police, which must proceed with the formal identification of human remains.
After a historical and scientific investigation, in recent days the investigators have deposited the results of their expertise that began in 2017.
The remains belong to a man, measuring 1.65 cm, about thirty years old; on the green shirt he wore, M.M's figures were embroidered.
In order to establish the presumed period of death, the investigations were based on the expertise of an Italian coin of five lire, struck between 1946 and 1950, which was found in the pocket of ski pants that the man wore; this detail led to the conclusion that the period of death was not before the winter of 1950.
The equipment found with the skier suggests that he was a well-off person and that, probably, he was not Italian: that's why the research did not work.
We got a pair of Rossignol Olympic skis number 7200-210 (a high-end model from 1940-1950, used by expert skiers); ski poles made of metal (and not bamboo: a luxury at the time) that reveal a certain economic availability; glasses for myopia-right eye; a notebook of 60 lifts for the Breuil-Plan Maison cable car; an Omega watch with the serial number 11666171, which made it possible to detect that this object had been sold on February 8, 1950. This watch was intended for the French colonies of Tunisia, Algeria and Morocco and this suggests that the skier could be of French nationality.
Sixty years have passed but investigators believe that these objects could remind a father, a brother, a grandfather, a friend and help the police (thanks to the help of social networks) to solve, finally, the mystery. |

I don't rate their chances of tracing his father or grandfather very highly.

Allegedly the skis were put on ebay and quickly snapped up by a Mr David Goldsmith of London. David said "it was about time I updated my ski equipment". The skis will be on their way to Mr Goldsmith once a few issues with the terms and conditions are clarified, by which time a spokesperson for the Natural History Museum has said they could well be interested in the skis as well as David's betamax recorder and his Val doonican 78 RPM vinyl records.
