When you see people walking up at the side of the piste what kind of skis and setup are they wearing?

Could be either alpine touring or telemark kit. Either way when going up hill the heel is free and skins are stuck onto the ski surface which allow the ski to easily slide forwards but grip preventing them slipping backwards. The name skins originates (I think) from seal skins being used but of course they are all synthetic now.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

A wide range of gear. The serious ones will have specialist lightweight touring skis, and lightweight tech bindings and boots. And skins to prevent skis slipping backwards.

They aren't wearing an altimeter otherwise they'd know they were going the wrong way

@Rhumage, almost certainly.
be aware however, that it's illegal to hike up the pistes in some places. also, the point is to get away from the madding crowd...

@Rhumage, can't think of any shops renting touring kit in Saalbach (though it's been a while!), but if there is then Flo at http://www.skischulesaalbach.at/skischool-saalbach will be able to point you in the right direction (and take you somewhere MUCH more fun than just hiking up the pistes!).

@Rhumage, Hagleitner in Saalbach sell touring gear - I'm not sure if they also rent. Otherwise, Gumpold in Hinterglemm definitely rent out. Or as above, contact Flo at the Alpin-schischule as they also rent gear. There is also a new ski school in Saalbach specialising in ski touring and free ride - www.freeride-skischool.at
