Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

France closes Mont Blanc to Italians

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
It would appear that the spat between the French and Italians about which bits of the Mont Blanc massiv belongs to who is escalating:

I confess I'm utterly confused. Where are they talking about? They talk about accessing from the Torino and that this 'Giant glacier climb' is on the Italian side. The only Giant Glacier I can think of is the Galcier du Geant (which is not normally described as a climb), but none of that is on the Italian side. So I'm confused about where this dispute actually is

There's some clarification in this Italian report (il Fatto Quotidiano) from 2 days ago ...

Nope I'm still none the wiser. Google translate gives this:

Quote:
According Italians, also, the border is not located near the refuge but 300 meters higher, in the middle of the glacier.

Now the Torino is at 3375m so what is there in that area at 3675m? And the answer according to my maps is a load of air. The highest point on the ridge in that area is Le Grand Flambeau at 3559m so where this point in the middle of the glacier is I cannot work out.

Could it mean 300m away, up the hill?

I imagine this is all to do with preventing day-trippers who've come up the cable car on the Italian side from wandering off onto the invitingly-flat glacier and potentially falling into holes on the French side where they have to be rescued by the PGHM. A shut gate is hardly going to present a barrier to any self-respecting mountaineer.

Well that's sort of what I'm assuming it means. And I agree is seems like a storm in a teacup. However I know that organised snowshoe walks are run from the Torino and maybe they are what the fuss is all about.

Hope it doesn't end up causing tit-for-tat cancellation of the Chamonix ski pass access to Courmayeur.

Edit: I love the way it's automatically change my use of the 't' word there Very Happy

@MadMountainMan, What actually changed your reference from a family of beautiful birds common in the UK (I assume) to the funniest bird in the world

If I edit my post it still refers to that lovely family of birds. It just doesn't display that way and shows 'booby' instead. I'm not even sure that's more PC than the original? rolling eyes

Hehe see! Very Happy I guess it's just considered a rude/offensive word!!!! Though I'd have thought booby just as bad.
