Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

I've discovered there's a possibility that I can fit in a week in Chamonix between the 13th and 27th Dec. Cost alone inclines me to the 13th to 20th.
Any (sensible!) opinions as to the worthiness of this would be most welcome.
I've been to Cham a few times but never this early.

Impossible to tell year on year - I was there at that time last year, and no skiing was done by us (due to poor snow) - just drinking (we were all living in Geneva so could come and go as we pleased). I might have attempted an odd day at CM just before xmas, but it was mostly rock dodging.

Last year was a very poor start to the winter though - I got a few more days in at the same time the year before. And this year might be epic - who knows. It's very early though, and even if there is a lot of fresh snow, there won't be much of a base built up.

As much as I love Chamonix, if it was me looking for a decent weeks skiing at that time, I'd go to Tignes or Val Thorens in France, or look at other countries with better early snow records.

It probably won't even be fully open on those days. 20-27th are better dates but as above Tignes or VT will be better choices for early season skiing. Last season warm December weather was uniform across Alps and glaciers were the only places to ski until the 27th. Everywhere else it was mostly rock-dodging. It's a gamble.

@gcbrigton, last year the "original" opening dates for every area other than Grands Montets and Les Houches (!?) was the 21st.

Embarrassed, CMB brought the opening dates forward by a week. Then couldn't as there wasn't any snow. rolling eyes

I'll probably head for Tignes.

@gcbrigton, on the grounds that it's effectively pre-season, wait until the week before before booking accommodation. Cham is going to be livelier and more fun than Tignes would be that time of year I'd think.

@under a new name, good call about waiting, but Tignes is pretty lively that time of year, doesn't feel like pre-season.
