Advice required.... driving from UK to Munich airport mid Jan, best way to go ??? How long from the ferry ??

Take the DFDS ferry dover to Dunkerque. Ensure you have winter tyres fitted before you set off. Go via Lille Namur, drop down thru Luxemburg, take a suck of fuel(cheapest in Europe) and continue down via Pirmasens, Stuttgart and into Munich . Allow for a 10 hour casual drive from the ferry. Could be quicker, but that's a bold park figure.

The route that @jafa describes is the generally accepted preferred route, assuming you go via Calais/Dunkerque.

Although if going to Munich Airport, which is a bit up the A9, then most mapping services will probably say Calais-Gent-Brussels-Cologne-Frankfurt... (at a guess)

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

@Pruman, Much easier to reach the Airport by simply switching from the A99 (coming in from Stuttgart) and picking up the A92 which starts at the A99 just after the Karlsfeld interchange. That way you avoid all the hang ups around the A9. The summer roadworks along the B10 between Pirmasens and Landau in der Pfalz have made that section almost entirely dual carriageway now.

The northern route is notorious for roadworks, hold ups and basically shit driving, plus it is a major truck route linking the industrial areas of the north and then on to Rotterdam with the south, which slows things down even more. Shorter on the map does not always mean quicker as andy and I frequently hear of the hold ups on the local radio. I have not used the northern route for anything other than going to the Netherlands or points further north for about 20 years now. The eastern roads through Belgium are even shitier than the usual Belgian abysmal standard, and Liège is a nightmare at any time of the day.

There are still some major roadworks between Frankfurt and Würzburg, particular around Marktheidenfeld/Wertheim where there are daily holdups due to trucks breaking down &/or accidents in the roadwork sections. There are some major long term roadworks (bridges being restored due to concrete cancer) all around Nürnberg causing vehicles to be diverted along different sections of the many bits of autobahn. You are also passing several major centres of population which means that timing is everything to avoid morning and afternoon Berufsverkehr (rush hour).

BTW the whole of the A9 in both directions between Munich and Dreieck Hollerdau is now covered by average speed cameras as well as the normal speed cameras (infra-red ones so no flash).

@thunderer, Don't know which ferry you're on, we go Hull Rotterdam then Brussels/ Dusseldorf/ Frankfurt/ Wurzburg/ Kempten etc. If going Dover/ Calais go the northern route via Brussels NOT Lille/ Liege (worst roads in Europe in winter, standing water/ aquaplaning, debris, no white lines, potholes, poor snow clearance/ de-icing.....and idiot drivers)......get into Germany as quick as you can if going through Belgium, do not stop at the Belgian services unless you like a 1970/80's UK services experience. Once in Germany first stop at Aachnerland services for breakfast.

Have driven the route to Munich many times, have done the Luxembourg route on a few occasions and its OK until you hit Karlsruke/ Pforzheim and then you are into serious Munich traffic and are a long way west, go down the Rhine is my advice. Fuel is cheap enough in Germany right now, Austria super-cheap if you going there.

Thank you so far !! How about best route from Munich airport to Saalbach on a Saturday morning 16th Jan. RAC suggest A8 as quickest route, other suggested route is via Wasserburg which would avoid Munich.

@Markymark29, The A25 Dunkirk to Lille has been completely resurfaced over the past 2 summers according to my sister who uses it regularly to get down to my place. and the Tournai to Namur motorway has also completed its resurfacing/building according to mates who drove that way recently. Did Dunkirk to Munich in 8 hours using 2 drivers Toofy Grin

@Samerberg Sue, its the Belgium section between Lille and Liege that is the worst part of the southern route to Aachen. As soon as you enter Belgium its noticeable straight away how bad the roads are compared to France. My OH was driving and a mini came past us at 2am in pouring rain, hit standing water on the motorway and did a 360 spin right in front of us......very balletic and they hit nothing, thankfully not us either, slowed them down a bit though!

@Markymark29, the whole of the section from Tournai right through to Namur has been resurfaced and in some places relaid completely from the foundations up.

The fact that some dickhead aquaplaned in front of you is not indicative of the road surface, it is testimony to the appalling standard of driving of way too many Belgians. I had a similar Frite aquaplane off the A4 between Strasbourg and Metz, missing everyone and luckily simply ending up facing the wrong way on the grass along side the the hard shoulder. They had overtaken us (we had slowed down as advised by the gantries) and hit standing water, started spinning and tried to accelerate out of it! Again injury free all round, but the car needed a tow truck to get it home.

@Samerberg Sue, what about Namur to Liege? The roads west of Liege are the worst. The car that spun was French by the way😜 and there WAS standing water, plus he/she was driving like a DH but the road was a contributory factor. I shall not use that road again anyway, just passing advice to the original poster as requested!
