Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Has anyone bought skis from this site?

Ive been looking around the web for a pair of slalom skis and stumbled across these...

http://usedski.co.uk/skis/adults?product_id=645

This seems like a really good price for race skis and I'm wondering whether anyone has used this site to buy skis before or knows whether or not its trustworthy?

Not used them, but at a guess = ex-rental skis from Austria

@el.sammo, that is an interesting one. I've not seen it before or seen it mentioned before. Can't find much info or reviews.

Somewhere mentioned it was Bulgaria based, though they have a contact address in the UK: Moor Farm, Barrowhill Road - which sound a bit....

As @albob says perhaps exp-rental, which wouldn't be good. Serviced by machine which will shorten the life of them a bit. That said they clearly you are getting a fully serviced product which you might not buying second hand elsewhere.

Plenty of choice, everything seems to be half the new price as standard. Interesting. I'd like to do some comparisons with new and ebay prices available but looks promising at first glance.

Anyone take the plunge?

Been looking myself and I could pick up a set of skis & boots for my 8yr old for £100/110 or so. Tempting, as knock off the cost of rental in Austria at the New Year (£40 through Crystal) and add in a few days rental here in Scotland and they might be cost neutral. Get 2 years out of them, even better. More likely just as good or better than rental stuff anyway, and saves the extra queuing for gear each trip.

Problem now is sizes for a rapidly growing lad. He's currently around 134cm tall, feet 22cm long and weighs 37kg. He skied in beginner classes at LaPlagne last year (we'd tried him a couple of times in Scotland before that when he was younger but never really took to it) and by the end of the week competently skied an easy blue with us. Got 3 more days in Scotland after that, at the end of which he was doing most of the blues at Nevis, in less than perfect conditions i.e narrow, thin, sometimes icy. He's not a timid skier, in fact we'll need to watch he doesn't get too reckless (outpaces his mother now).

Going by what I can find online would suggest UK 3.5 boots and skis around 125cm. Boots I'd go bigger i.e. UK4 at least to account for growth by the time we get skiing again in Dec (he's still outgrowing shoes at a rate of knots). If I go for 125cm skis I doubt he'd get more than this season out of them, 130cm would probably give 2 seasons but may be too long for his current ability. Then again he is still growing and is heavy for his height/age (not much fat on him, he's just 'solid' and always has been). He might cope with the longer skies but I wouldn't want to put him off.

Any opinions will be gladly received.

My son is 141cm and 35kg. He is on 130s at the moment but I've just bought him 138s as race skis. Santa is also bringing him a set of K2 Juvys at 138. His boots are Mondo 22.5 and he is about UK size 2. He went from 110s to 130s.

@Ravelin, we've found boot sizings to be all over the place. We have/had a few pairs and you can't trust them. Which makes it tricky buying online. Although effectively that is what we have done so far. But we are buying cheap and taking punts. Everything is resellable anyhow.

Skis are easier in a sense. Kids will ski anything and not complain. What do they know Toofy Grin Laughing

If you're making an economic argument in favour of buying kids skis don't forget to factor in the hassle/cost of servicing them and transporting them. On the plus side you get to avoid the hassle of hire shops, and you'll probably be able to sell them second hand for not much less than you paid for them.

You'll find they grow out of boots much faster than they grow out of skis. For that reason I have adjustable boots (Roces) for my kids, which although they cost a bit more cover a number of sizes and so last much longer before they need to be replaced.

For a beginner's skis, if it's a choice of slightly too long or slightly too short, I'd go for slightly too short.

@Layne, Yeah, boots are a big quandary, but then again, how often do you see people, especially kids, change from the default boots they are offered at a rental desk. Boots I choose will be going off the declared Mondo size, so probably Mondo 23 for his 22cm feet, which should allow for growth. He has fairly narrow feet, with long toes (like his mum) and I don't expect the boots to fit for any longer than one season.

I think the boots were priced at around £46 for that kind of size, less £20 if you buy them and skis together, so being creative you could say £26/36 depending on how you apportion the discount across skis & boots.

@keiranm, for the Austria ski trip at New Year we already have 2 sets of ski carriage booked. Would expect to 'sneak' one of each of boys skis in with these. Boots can go in a suitcase as we've something like a combined luggage limit of nearly 70kg, excluding the skis. We got nowhere close to the limit last year. Ski transportation at other times i.e. Scotland -> roofbox. Not sure servicing will come into it, but I'd want to get the boot/ski fit and DIN setting done properly.

@Ravelin, for sure. I guess all I was really saying was that it's going to be a bit hit and miss. Anyway, I had a butchers at some of the skis. My eldest (10) is currently on 139 Juvys and I looking for something around 150 as no doubt come December he will have grown again. But didn't see anything that took my eye.
