I'm a first time skier off to Bulgaria in a couple of weeks and haven't bought any eye protection yet. Any ideas what I should be looking for ?

both! Sunglasses for when it's sunny/lunch stops, goggles for bad light and snow.

Welshgirl, Sunglasses and goggles. For sunnies try and buy something that "wraps round" but also something that you can wear in the summer. No point in having a nice pair of sunnies for 1 week a year.
Sometimes you will get conditions of "flat light" , this is generally low cloud that blankets any light scource and produces no shadows, this can be very dissorientating but goggles will help a little. If there is falling snow then goggles are a must. Anyone who has bean caught in unexpexcted snowfall without goggles rarely gets caught out a second time (unless your name is Frosty the Snowman). Welcome to SnowHeads, and have a bonza time in Bulgaria.

Oh and make sure the Goggles have a red/orange or yellow tint as these are the colours which increase contrast letting you see more in bad light conditions

and make sure the sunnies are cat 3 UV as when the sun shines it does so on a great big mirror

If you are intending to wear a helmet make sure you try them out with the helmet on before buying

...and buy your goggles on the morning of a bad light day. Take the goggles outside and see which colour tint you can see best in. I struggle in flat light. If it's really snowy, I use goggles with yellow lenses that fit over my helmet. I also have a pair of adidas sunglasses that have interchangeable lenses - pink and plain. They are really good.

If you buy sunglasses (and no, they are not essential), don't buy ones with metal frames, if it gets very cold, the metal can stick to your face.

But most importantly, spend several hours trying on both goggles and sunglasses (but not simultaneously) in front of a mirror to make sure you look GOOD!*

Wear The Fox Hat, and if you're really stupid  you can rip a pair of matching hairless stripes out of your sideburns.
