Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

The GoPro drone - has GoPro bitten off more than it can chew?

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
There's no question that GoPro has revolutionised the filming of skiing, by capturing P.O.V. footage and near-death moments (e.g. avalanche burial and crevasse plunges) in a way that previous cameras have only been witnesses 'after the fact'. And, of course, it's triggered a whole new sector of brilliant action cams from other makers. But the problems with P.O.V. filming are all too obvious to the viewer. The skier needs to be seen by an independent eye ... most perfectly a bird's eye.

GoPro's response is to announce the manufacture of a drone (with self-tracking capabilities, like the recently announced and crowd-funded Lily) ... but the news has met a mixed reception.

I think it's a logical step, but if that zeppelin of an octo-copter drone in the article is their chosen carrier, they've missed their profitable consumer market by a mile - one of the new breed of backpack hovercams is more likely to appeal to their mass market. One (or more) of those startups is probably already in the sights of Foxxconn to be borg'd for IP

Whatever they are hope for their owners sake they are ski-pole proof....that's what they'll be getting wrapped around them if they fly anywhere near me! Toofy Grin

Next on YouTube: "Grumpy skier flails pointlessly at out-of-reach drone then falls over! LULZ! IN SUPER HD 4k!"... I'd watch that.

@Richard_Sideways, If that's aimed at me?.............Not grumpy me pal, just believe that back-country in the mountains should stay what it is and quiet, not be spoilt by buzzing about drones, the next selfie-seekers' must have vanity device. I guess they'll be set at about 8-10m above GL in which case I agree they'll be out of reach - I hope they become banned well before I have to take a swipe at them btw.

Be interesting to see if the bloomin things can fly at altitude - if they have the power and aerodynamic performance to cope with the thinner air.

Here's the rules from the CAA:

Don’t fly your unmanned aircraft within 50m of a person, vehicle, building or structure, or overhead groups of people at any height.

Difficult to achieve that above a piste......

There was one being flown over one of the pistes in Alpe d'Huez earlier this year. Definitely overhead and within 50 m
