Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Is Briancon a good base to stay for 2 weeks in Serre Chevalier?

So, the scenario is that the boy is on a weeks holiday prior to half term in said resort, we're looking for self catering accomodation for that week and the one after and picking him up from the school hotel on their departure day.

Central Serre Chev accomodation seems thin on the ground and Briancon is a proper town with night stuff to do but is it out in the sticks where the skiing is concerned?

Yes I can see it on a piste map but first hand opinions would be appreciated.

Many thanks guys.

I don't know anything about accommodation there, but it's a nice town and nowhere's all that far from the lift from memory. Montgenèvre/Claviere also easily accessible if you have a car (and maybe there's a bus).

Yes we're driving over but don't "really" want to drive to the flifts every day. We're looking for somewhere abit noisier as our son will be 12 and like doing stuff.

@homers double,
Depends where you are in Briancon some places are close to the lifts some are far away.
I love Briancin as a place but it has not got a wild nightlife, you are probably better off in Chantmerle or Villeneuve from that point of view.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

@homers double, it is fairly quiet in winter in the old town. There's some new accommodation near the Briancon lifts (Aigle Bleu) and my friend has an apartment in the old town (http://www.eurekaski.com/flexible-self-catering-pres-des-forts) and there's plenty of accommodation in the other villages. Depends what you are looking for. Apart from my own apartment in Monetier there are plenty of others close to the lifts in most of the villages. Newer apartments like Adret, Hameau du Rocher Blanc in Chantemerle, P&V in Villeneuve. Plenty of hotels too, including some recently refurbished.

I rather liked Villeneuve when I stayed there back (Ithink) in the 80s. One dark thing, though, one of the Tour op week I was on (though not in our chalet) was killed on the busy main road that ran through the village. If separation of road from village has been improved, I'd say it was a good base.

@achilles, there is now an underpass which goes underneath next to the village. Lovely old village with quite a lot of privately owned apartments. There's some chalets there too, as well as some in Le Bez and near the Aravet lift.

@homers double, drop me a PM if you need any help with locating accommodation.

@achilles, it has been there a long time, ever since i have been going there, so not sure when it went in. Crosses the road under the bridge over the river and runs along side .

Lovely town. Far end and the windswept end of the skiing, I seem to remember. I thought the other end of Serre Che had the better skiing to be honest. When I went, which was a few years ago, the lift system wasn't the best in terms of getting from one end of the valley to another. It could be better now.
If you have a car and are there for two weeks then Italy, Risoul, La Grave are all great day trips.

@Hells Bells, I may well do that thank you, I've looked at your friends apartment and will bear it in mind. Need a second group meeting I think, possibly wine free to make some serious decisions.

@homers double, Briancon is still accessible in the evenings, even if you are staying in one of the other villages as there is a bus service from one end of the vally to the other. I think the last bus is around 10.30 ish from Briancon and around 11pm from Monetier. At half-term though the service might be more frequent and run later.
