Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Sponsor a Disability Snowsport Ski School

Poster: A snowHead
This came through from DSUK, and I'd like to share it with Snowheads. If you love skiing, share the love!

We want to be able to share our mutual love of skiing with even more disabled people, and have decided to raise vital funds through a crowdfunder.co.uk campaign, which runs from Wednesday 29th April for 4 weeks. We are hoping to raise £15,000 to run one of our adaptive ski schools for a year. The success of the campaign relies on wide circulation, thus attracting as many pledgers as possible.

http://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/sponsor-a-disability-snowsport-ski-school

At the heart of our crowdfunder campaign is our desire to increase opportunities, fitness, mobility, freedom, social interaction, independence and skills of people with disabilities, and to identify and nurture the abilities of young potential athletes.

But, we currently have a funding shortfall for ski schools of at least £50,000.

Crowdfunder.co.uk is an alternative means of funding that will allow us to raise vital funds through the power of the crowd. This is achieved through people backing our project with pledges of money and receiving a reward from us in return that reflects the money contributed, as a way of 'thanking' our backers. We have a number of attractive and exclusive awards on offer for a wide range of pledges, starting from as little as £5 and moving up to top-end company packages, which may be perfect for your business. Please do have a look at these, and consider pledging.

DSUK relies on the support of donors to ensure that people with disabilities are not excluded from snowsport. With the money raised, we will provide therapeutic, life-enhancing and exciting activities for individuals and groups who require adaptive equipment and special instruction and support. Our work takes many forms, such as dedicated adaptive snowsports schools, overseas activity weeks, a schools and youth programme, thirteen local groups operating regularly across the UK and the provision of training for specialist instructors and volunteers. Additionally, we have an elite programme in the form of the British Disabled Ski Team (BDST) through which we identify talented athletes who have the potential to compete in the Paralympic Games.

To reach our target, we need your help. Crowdfunder.co.uk is an 'all or nothing' platform - we need to raise 100% of our target to be successful and receive the monies pledged. As such, as well as considering backing the project, we would greatly appreciate if you could spread the word of our Crowdfunder campaign to your contacts via your social media and mailing lists. We will be continually advertising the Campaign on our Twitter account: @dsuksnowsport and Facebook pages. The wide circulation of our campaign is vital if we are to be successful in reaching our £15,000 target.

There are rewards too!

Pledge £20 and you get a DSUK mug
Pledge £30 and you get a 8GB USB stick as well
Pledge £40 and you get a hoodie
More than that, and the rewards are even more awesome!

They've raised £2360 so far. Let's get them to their target Snowheads! Very Happy

done...but really prefer an option to donate what I like without the "reward". If you want to donate more than £5 but don't want money wasted on mugs and hoodies it seems to me you have to donate multiple times.

actually, another downside is that with crowdfunding if they don't raise £15k by 27th May none of the donations are made - why not a straightforward donation? I hope they get the £15k, but what's the betting that if they don't most people won't go back and make a donation instead. To me crowdfunding is for business start ups not charities.

and what about gift aid?

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Ah, I see that @holidayloverxx has raised the same concerns as I did on the other thread (and please, there should be only one - it'll annoy people if two get going, which would rather defeat the object).

The point about gift aid is the key one - "crowd funding" seems particularly inefficient for a registered charity.

They are now up to £3520, nearly a quarter of the way to their target, and up over £1000 in 2 days (thanks all Snowheads who've already pledged)

Where your money will be going
Your pledges will support one of our ski schools for a year. Our ski schools provide one-to-one and group lessons for all ages and disabilities, helping towards our vision of equal access to snowsports and providing life-changing and life-enhancing experiences for disabled people.

We are determined that the adaptive snowsports experience shall be a route towards acceptance, but we need your help to break down barriers, including funding, which may stop people from enjoying the physical and mental benefits of snowsports.

How your pledges help:

£50 subsidises an adaptive ski lesson (a £40 indoor adaptive lesson costs us £90 to deliver)
£150 buys ski tip connectors
£200 buys a tow release, enabling a sit-ski to travel up the ski lift
£3,000 buys an adaptive sit-ski
£50,000 will run an adaptive ski school for a year

We currently have a funding shortfall for ski schools of at least £50,000
The money raised through this crowdfunder appeal will go towards:

Increasing delivered lessons by 20-40%
Increasing clients by 15-30%
Providing opportunities for snowsports to under-represented groups of disabled people"

Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

Crowdfunder has a gift aid option - just tick the box

I've made a very modest donation, with gift aid, but this still strikes me as very cumbersome - with the risk that none of us will end up donating, and would have to jump through more hoops if the appeal fails and we still wanted to help. I can see that this "all or nothing" approach makes sense with some non-charitable appeals where people want to support a specific project, rather than just give money. But for a well established charity I can't see the point.

Normally you can't gift aid a donation for which you get anything in return (e.g. I am a member of the weekly lottery for the local hospice, but I can't use my Charities Aid Foundation account to pay for that - nor for anything I buy in the shop they run.

Not sure how this would work for the folk who get a hoody - presumably only their donation minus the value of the hoody can be gift aided?

Right I'm going to bump this post a bit as DSUK are still quite a long way from there £15,000 target

I my self have benefited from DSUK because without them I wouldn't have started to learn to ski at all. I have cerebral palsy and have wanted to ski ever since there was a school trip to Bulgaria which I couldn't go on due to the school not knowing how accesible it would be. Fast forward to 3 years ago I was doing some searching on the Internet and decided to search for disabled skiing in the UK and up popped the DSUK website, I sent off for some information and soon after booked my first lesson in a Bi-Ski. After a couple of trips to Big Bear in California and deciding to have a go at monoskiing and also being one of the first disabled people in the UK to have a go on a Sit down snowboard. I still enjoy being part of DSUK

Here is the last video that was from the other month

Hi all snowHead
Please note that this is an all or nothing for DSUK. They get the full £15k or they get none of the money that has been pledged.
Please give what you can.

This is what DSUK give to the Jumbulance VIPs

"Thank you to all 165 of you for believing in our campaign to sponsor our adaptive ski schools for a year. Unfortunately, we were not successful in reaching our £15,000 target and therefore all money is being returned to you, our backers,
Despite failing to reach our target, we have been overwhelmed by the level of response and positive comments about the campaign and the charity more widely.
There are still many ways you can support Disability Snowsport UK. We are constantly working hard to fundraise to reduce lesson costs as much as possible and to buy new adaptive equipment. Our aim is to make snowsports as affordable as possible for disabled people, and we still need your help to be able to continue our work. As we are a not-for-profit charity, all money donated goes directly into helping us provide equal and comparative cost access for disabled people.
It would be fantastic if you could continue to support us. This can be done in a number of ways:
Money can be donated to our JustGiving page: https://www.justgiving.com/disabilitysnowsportuk/
You can enter the DSUK lottery for as little as £2.50 a month: http://www.disabilitysnowsport.org.uk/Get-Involved/Make-A-Million-Friends.aspx"
