Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

what length skis would i need these days?

I used to do lots of skiing. I skied on our local dry slope at least once a week from the age of about 12. I used to do the dry ski slalom race circuit. And when i was about 17 i became a dry slope instructor which i did for about 10 years. I also went to the snow most years.

BUT, things have changed a lot! When i stopped skiing regularly (marriage, kids, etc), carvers were only just coming in. Ive done a few snowdome trips over the years and have been amazed by how short the skis are (my race skis when i was a teenager were 185cm).

I'd love some advice on what length skis you think i should be using now. I always feel a bit silly at the snowdome telling them im an advanced skier but have no clue what length i should be on!

So, i would say im advanced but not daring (i like my smooth wide red runs). I am 5ft 6 and weigh about 60kg. And im a 37 year old female if that makes any difference.

i look forward to your advice.

Xx

@breeze11, for a pure piste ski somewhere around 160cms is probably about right.

Agreed. I'm female, 67kg, 5'4". My piste skis are 162 kneissl redstars. Mind you, at Hemel the choice in rentals is 150 or 170.

@breeze11, are you planning on getting out to the mountains next winter? Welcome back to skiing.

Am 5ft 5 and a shade heavier than you. I haven't had a "pure piste ski" (which I think these days for most people probably means something under 75mm underfoot, rather than sub 70mm) for about 5 years. For a good skier I would think 160-170cm is the range to go for. Maybe on an indoor slope where it's harder to really give it some welly, go for something nearer 160 as they will be easier to turn in the smaller space, and you don't need the extra edge grip that you might want skiing fast wide turns up a mountain. For what it's worth, I am seriously contemplating my first "narrow" ski purchase in a while in the form of the Blizzard Latigo- at around the 170cm length-described as all mountain but 78mm underfoot, with a bit of rocker in the tail.
Other skis I have tested and really enjoyed over recent times includes the Nordica Doberman Spitfire Pro (various models out there) a true piste ski, grips like a maniac. Think I'd stick to around a 163 in those!

I would have thought that something around nose height would suit best. next time you go to the snowdome try a couple of different lengths they don't mind you changing during a session), probably 160 and 164 see where you are happiest.
