Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Kp jobs you won't need experience. Just a good attitude. If the companies you are interested in are advertising the jobs then apply.

@Robborder, Son #2 was a kp/np for Skiworld. He had his interview in mid May so start getting your CV together. He had been working at our local pub for two years so if you can find anything to show team work, timeliness etc that would be good. If not then saying you are going to get a kp job is better than nothing.

At the time Skiworld did offer a specific resort. He was the first to be offered a job that year so chose Courchevel 1850, needless to say he had blast.

Good luck, let us know how you get on.

@cad99uk, sounds amazing! thanks this helps, am i right in saying that other TOs such as Chrystal wait until last minuet with letting you know which resort? i take it he had no problems with working for skiworld?

@cad99uk, also, i will only be 18, will that effect my chances of getting an interview?

@Robborder, He had absolutely no problems at all working for Skiworld. He really liked the np (night porter) part of the job. Meant that he got first lifts.

Son #1 did a season with Equity back in the day. He knew he was going to be in Austria but did not find out the resort until the training week out there. He ended up working as a sous chef in Schladming and also had an amazing time. Do not get too hung up on wanting to choose your resort, it will severely limit your options.

Both my son and daughter worked for Inghams, my son is in France now. They recruit through workaseason and now onwards I think? You can request a country/resort and they do their best to fulfil what you ask for.

Probably not. Getting a job offer could depend on whether you come across as a mature or immature 18yo.
If resort is important to you then apply to those tour operators that specialise in said resort - but this will limit the number of applications you send.
For each TO you are thinking of applying to, check their website for 'Work for us' buttons - this should aid you in when to start applying; but as a general rule as soon as the season ends - TOs will then have an idea what vacancies they need to fill after they have recruited 'returners' (ie people who are doing another season with them).

Are any of the recruiters good for getting a job in a primarily French-speaking resort or would you be better off looking yourself?

@cad99uk, did your son have any previous experience as on the skiworld website it says that "Previous experience of working nightshifts is essential" and you also need previous hospitality experience. as these are essential, would it still be worth applying for?

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

@Robborder, No, my son had not worked nightshifts before. He had worked as a KP at our local pub at weekends. I do not think it was an explicit requirement when he applied. It will still be worth applying, they can only say no.. It would help if you show you understand what a nightshift entails ... so

Start work at 11 pm. Ensure returning guests did not disturb hotel as they returned from their nights out. Through the night carry out safety checks including clearing snow from fire escapes. Cook dinner for guests who have delayed flights/transfers. Lay up breakfast tables. Make cakes for next days afternoon tea. Cleaning dining room as required. Take delivery of bread, meat etc in morning. Watch snow falling during the night.

Finish work 7:30 am. Make bacon roll. Pickup up snowboard, get on first lift and lay down first tracks.

I think they will be looking for evidence that you have the stamina to work through the night. So think of other things you have done that show that you are suitable.

@cad99uk, @Kenzie, i am finalizing a kp job in a local pub but i wont be starting until around mid june, would it be worth applying to TOs early and say i have experience planned or should i wail until i have had a few weeks experience prior to applying?

sorry if this is a stupid question, im just a bit stuck

many thanks

 You know it makes sense.
You know it makes sense.
@Robborder, definitely let them know that you have something lined up. Any prior work experience you have will be a bonus so, whatever it is, don't be afraid to detail it.

You asked whether big TOs like Crystal wait until last minute to let you know where you're going. The answer is typically no. Most of the time you apply for the job with a certain country in mind, and then list your top 3 choices of resort. You also may get asked for preferences (i.e. small resort, large resort) and may get something based on that. If you apply at the start of the recruitment process i.e. by July or August and are successful, you'll likely find out your resort by the autumn time. In rare instances its not the case, but in my experience previously working for Crystal (albeit 5 years ago now) that's how it worked for most of the people I worked with.

Well done on organising a kp job at your local. If only there was a simple answer to your question. I think you need to back as many horses as possible. There is only a limited number of jobs and they will start recruiting soon.

I would draw up a list of TOs and then ring up a couple that you don't mind being turned down by. Ask them the question. You will then get an idea of how the land lies.

For the TOs you really want to work for then apply as soon as they start recruiting. If you don't get an interview ring to ask why. If the lack of experience is a problem then apply again when you have got some. Include a reference from your employer. Be unstoppable, show them the spirit that you need on a season.

Apply to the remaining TOs on your list when you have some experience. Include a reference.

Keep politely reminding them you are out there.

Or, if you are finishing school this year then work full time June to beginning Jan and then go out and self fund your season. Also think about what you can do for the summer following your winter. How about campsite courier?

To follow up on what @cad99uk said, definitely apply to quite a few TOs. And if you're not immediately successful with companies that you really want to work for, keep applying with others. Pretty much all companies will recruit all the way up to the start of the season. Around November time also sees many people pull out of jobs for the winter, so lots of TOs face the problem of filling positions at late notice (and often they're not fortunate enough to have a decent reserve list). In my last working season as a resort manager for a chalet company, I spent the first 2 weeks of the season 1 team member down and we had a late withdrawal and couldn't fill it immediately. So definitely, if you have nothing sorted in the summer, keep on applying (especially so if you're adding work experience to your CV in the mean time).
