Poster: A snowHead

Hi.
I'm 65. 5'11", and I weigh 74kg. I ski mostly on piste, but I like to go off down the gulleys occasionally, and I like to do bumps. I ski mostly on a pair of Volkl Racetigers at 165cm that are about seven years old. I'm not an expert skier: I don't go off into the powder, but I'm better than most of my friends. And I should be. I ski nearly every day in the winter that it isn't actually snowing. I carve on piste, and if I look back at my tracks I get a nice rounded continuous curve, with a bit of spray from the skid at the widest part of the arc. I can whip the Racetigers around quickly in a tight spot. But when we get to a schuss, all my friends leave me behind. I've also got a pair of Salomon Lords at 177. But I find them a bit soft on piste, so I don't often get them out.
I asked at the local ski shop if he had anything ex-rental that was a bit longer for more speed, and a bit wider for the little bit of crud I ski on off the edge. He suggested a pair of new Volkl RTM 75 is at 173. The price doesn't matter: I can get them cheaper in England, but for a small differential I like to support the local economy. They weren't made up, so he gave me a pair of Volkl Tigershark 10ft at 175, saying they would be very similar. I took them out this morning for a trial. They were certainly faster than mine, and they had better edges on the ice. But I found the turn radius a bit long for tight steep pitches. Now, I am sure I could get used to it, but if I'm going to find it difficult in tight spots, I am not sure I want to make the effort, just for some extra speed.
The other ski I was thinking of was the Rossignol Ex 84. It seems to be available with the right sort of dimensions. But when I saw a video of it, it looked a bit dead. I might be wrong. I tried a friend's K2 Apaches once, and I found them completely lifeless. So I don't want to buy something that is going to be like that.
Any advice?

@planeurge, I've been on RTM 81s at 181 since last year. Not sure the Tigershark will be an exact equivalent. They are not rockered are they? Anyway, long story short, I love the RTMs having spent most of my time on piste over the last two seasons because I'm always skiing with children these days. They have unbelievable grip on ice and just the right turning radius for my GS style of skiing. And they are fast, I mean really. Charging down the Kandahar in Garmisch is just huge fun on these things.
Off piste they are at least as good as my previous Mantras in the typical euro pow that you get around here, i.e fairly heavy or cut up powder, heavy slush whatever. Definitely recommended.

Thanks @Steilhang, I'm still thinking about it. They'll still be there next season.

I be just binned my old salomon street racers for a pair of volkl ac 50's..in 177cms......for a similar type of skiing as you describe.
Have to say they are superb..... Fast, hold an edge really well, charge thru crud and slush..... But also float quite well in soft stuff too.

I've just bought a pair of Atomic Nomad S Ti's at 171. £285. Seemed like a bargain. A shorter radius than the Volkls - allegedly - so they might answer my tight turning requirement. I'll let you know next winter whether I think I've made the right choice.

@planeurge, Temper Ti or Radon Ti? If it's 171 it would have to be the Radon I think?
