Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

New Skis

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
So I am having to replace my old ski and would like some advice on getting some new ones.
So firstly the old skis were 2011/12 Salmon 24 hours (170). Great on piste ski and could go pretty much anywhere there were piste markers.

A bit about me, I'm 180cm and 75kg. I am a fairly aggressive skier.
Having spent the winter working in a ski shop I have been fortunate enough to try out a few new pairs of skis such as the Salmon X-Drive 8.0 FS which I think is a fantastic ski. (I skied the 182) I also skied the Q-85 which i thought was good in most conditions but not really a ski I would buy.

So really what I am asking is what are other brands skis like that are similar to the X-Drive?

My other question is what would be a good ski to go with it for those days where there is lots of snow? I currently have a pair of Salomon Q-Labs 183s which are ok bit I fins that they do not like to do short turns at all. They are great at skiing fast and doing big GS turns in pretty much anything from fresh pow, to crud, tracked out snow and on piste and in small bumps (if your knees can stand up to it). Now this is a lot of fun but for next season I want a ski that is a little bit more playful. Something that is able to dial it back a bit and enjoy the ride rather than a ski on steroids.

Cheers in advance Smile

Blizzard Latigo, Brahma if you want to go wider; K2 AMP Rictor 82 XTI, Blizzard X-power 810 Ti IQ.

I haven't demoed a lot of skis of that type but Blister, whose reviews I generally like, really rate it. I think their verdict is it's pretty much the best in it's class although they do compare it to similarish skis, probably worth a read anyway

Something softer, with more rocker, then. How wide do you want to go?

Nordica Soul Rider if you want to stay on the skinny side, or something from Line or Armada if you want to go wider. Salomon Rocker122 and Atomic Bentchetler should also fit the bill on the fatter end of the spectrum.

I just got a pair of the new Bents. Amazing fun, not actually bad at all on piste, they can carve mid sized turns, have got me down a few blacks in reasonable style, but in the powder.... by god, you feel like you are surfing up and down giant waves and they turn on a sixpence.

Cheers guys this really helps. I should have also mentioned that I am planning on mounting the skis with the salomon guardian bindings for short trips up from lift. Nothing too serious but still able to get away from the crowds. Are certain skis much harder to skin on or does it not matter too much?

That's basically a weight thing. If you want relatively light weight but strong for aggressive skiing (also on-piste), try the Nordica Nrgy 100.

@dr_windsurfer, I have those bindings on two pairs on my skis (under the Atomic Tracker name), one on an all mountain 98mm wide ski and the other on the 120mm Bents. I love them, they may be a bit heavy but they are a rock solid binding which feels identical in use to a standard alpine binding. To be honest I found the bigger ski easier to tour on, the rocker gives less skin in contact with the snow and the new Atomic wide skin has a slick front section which really lessens drag in deeper snow.

If I was going to be doing longer full day tours I would get specialist lightweight kit, but for the casual half day up touring that I do I have found them to be brilliant.
