Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

2016 - Like Chamrousse but.......not !

Hi,

returned to skiing after 20+ years this year, loved it.

Three of us went to Chamrousse, my daughter and I skiied, my wife didn't. Found it to be a really nice place and considered returning but.... flights from our local airport to Geneva came up at a very reasonable price when easyjet released the Feb flights.

Can anyone recommend somewhere with a similar feel, probably using Ben Bus from Geneva, so slightly limited where we go.

My wife loved the forest walks / snow shoeing etc.. at Chamrousse.

Thank you Very Happy

Where Pam lives, les Saisies, round there should be good or even nearer to GVA: Pras de Lys. Those are close to Geneva.

In the Maurienne: St Francois Longchamps or one of the Maurienne ski villages... why not Bonneval?

@tomlin169, Les Saisies probably would be good, but no public transport here - you'd need to rent a car. Closer to Geneva is Combloux - there's a bus (though not Ben's) to Megeve, which presumably would take you there. Praz sur Arly is closer to Geneva than Les Saisies - plenty of forest walks there, too, and prices are cheaper than Les Saisies (and it's also probably less crowded in school holidays).

There's no way you are going to get to Bonneval on Bens Bus! It's hard enough to get to from Modane, never mind Geneva...

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

I've no idea what Bens Bus is to be honest.

ok I've just looked at their website. They don't seem to go anywhere that interesting.

can the OP fly to Grenoble or is it just Geneva?

I think he has flights to Geneva but - why does it have to be Bens Bus? Other people have busses too. wink

Cham Express go to Chamonix, and stop at Sallanches. From there it would not be too expensive a taxi ride up to the Arly Valley and there might be other options too. But renting a car would be easier - and probably cheaper than anything involving a taxi, too.

Crikey that sounds cheap.

What baggage does it include?

thats just hand baggage at the mo, booked in a hurry ! going to add one hold bag between the three of us, worked fine on the last trip. Can get the North Face type 40L duffel bags on as hand luggage and fit a load in.

@tomlin169, you can rent a car from either side of Geneva airport. Masses of discussion here about which is best. sometimes (though not always) the French side is cheaper but on the Swiss side you get winter tyres and the Swiss motorway vignette included. Both are useful. The winter tyres make it much less likely you'll have to use chains if it's snowy and the motorway is the easiest way out to the French border post.

Having saved so much on your flights you could afford to splash out on a car with winter tyres.... wink

 You know it makes sense.

Hiring and driving is generally cheaper than 3 transfers too. Not to mention your wife could venture even further afield if she drove too. Geneva does have 2 sides and we have always used the French side except this year the Swiss side was cheaper (very strange). French side is easier as the hire place is in the building other than finding your way back there. Then there is all the tyres and Swiss Motorway tax discussion ... but that has been done to death in other threads.

If I were goint to Chamrousse from GVA from the French side I would probably go St Genis Pouilly then the semi motorway to Bellegarde then Annecy. Then again if I were going to Chamrousse I wouldn't start from GVA.

According to the maps it is 2 hours.

Which is the same (ish) as lyon to Deux Alpes and people wouldn't think twice about driving that.
