Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

The Holy Grail of Touring Skis

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
I'd like a ski that is light as an American beer but strong as a pair of Swiss freeride planks, fat and soft enough to enjoy the powder but narrow enough to cut it on ice. The holy grail of touring skis must be out there but after an afternoon of searching on the internet I couldn't find it. Could somebody please point me in the right direction, that is all. Thanks.

Seriously I'm lost, it's easier to find the remote control or the g-spot.

Here's a bit of info - not much really, anybody else got more info?

DB, I've just bought a pair of Scott Aztecs (not the Pro version) from t-p.com for that very purpose. Will know in January if I made a good choice Laughing

quote:-

The Aztec is the all mountain ski from Scott. Light and versatile dedicated to an effortless ride in any condition of snow and terrain.
Aztec is a unique concept. Short sidecut with wider body that can perform everywhere thanks to the Dual Radius. This makes the ski easy in fresh or difficult snow, while amazing on piste and hard snow with a very good grip.
The Aztec will satisfy touring people, instructors, ski patrols, mountain guides an people who are searching for an exclusively light ski. The perfect apporach for mountain skiing with freedom and safety.

Tech : Light sandwich wood construction with triaxial fabrics, progressive and wide tip.

Construction : SSC Lam - Sandwich Sidewall Cap Laminate

Features : Pro Tip, Race Finish, Dual Radius, Pre Track.

If i were in the market for a new touring set up (which I will be next year), I'd be concentrating on these:

http://www.telemark-pyrenees.com/shop/product_info.php?cPath=1_48_162&products_id=2245

with dynafit bindings of course

Although maybe the offshoots of DrakeBoinay will have come up with something interesting in the way of light high performance carbon skis by next year. (Not sure the DP offerings will be that light this year - they have a wood core which adds a bit of weight I would have thought)

Cedric, just ...... don't wink

So here's the shortlist ...... (subject to change with the weather)
(If anybody has toured with these skis I'd be interested in your feedback).

1. Völkl Snow Wolf
170cm - 113-76-100 mm
2512 g/pair
http://www.telemark-pyrenees.com/shop/product_info.php?cPath=1_48_162&products_id=2193
My comments - Looks like a very good allrounder (top marks in this link http://www.outdoor-magazin.com/sixcms/detail.php?id=104334
and recommended in various other links), very light but reviewers said it was still burly enough to handle most situations.
May not be able to demo.

(from internet review, marks out of 5)

Climb - 3
Allround - 5
Downhill - 4
Freeride - 4

2.
Dynafit FR 10.0 Carbon 05/06
178 cm - 118-88-110 mm
2780 g/pair
http://www.telemark-pyrenees.com/shop/product_info.php?cPath=1_48_162&products_id=2245
My comments - Really light for the width/size but the Snow Wolfs above are lighter. 178 might be too long for me. Good marks but not the best from those reviewed. Probably best for people who tour mainly to get powder turns.
May not be able to demo.

Climb - 2
Allround - 3
Downhill - 4
Freeride - 4

3.
Dynastar Legend 8000
172 cm - 116-79-102 mm
ca 3450 g/pair
http://www.telemark-pyrenees.com/shop/product_info.php?cPath=1_48_162&products_id=2151
My comments - Not a specific touring ski (hence the heavier weight). Great reviews from many sources but some testers (probably heavier people) said it was too soft.
Easy to demo.

No internet review for this ski

I think you're being a bit mean on the climb marks. 2.5-2.7 kg is very light, particularly the Dynafit which is quite a burly ski by any standards. If you put Dynafit bindings on either of them, you have a pretty featherweight set-up IMO.

Ski reviews should be taken with a pinch of salt, I was expecting the Dynastar to score something like

Climb - 3
Allround - 4
Downhill - 5
Freeride - 5

anybody else got reviews on these skis?

DB,

I only know the 8000 as a downhill ski but will hope to give it a good go in the next few weeks.
My initial impressions were that it was easy to handle and had a good edge... so no problems going down
its just how good it is going up. Altho' it may seem a bulky ski that will be for you to rate in your context
but those reviews say that the climb is 3, equal to the Snow Wolf. I would guess that most people would
say it has definately got freeride covered..!!

/\/\/\ Not sure I'd agree with this. I used to tour on the old snot green and orange Intuitiv Bigs (which have metamorphosed into the Legend 8000s basically). It was a heavy set-up. The fact that they were 188cm long probably didn't help though.
There were great on the downhill though

JT,

The Snow wolf's dimensions are a shade smaller than the 8000 but the Dynastars are almost a kg heavier Shocked I suspect when rating all these (downhill orientated) touring skis for climbing they are comparing them to superlight skinny setups that don't descend all that well.

When I'm on powder day tours I'd probably take the Mojo's (at ca 4000g/pair Shocked ). If I didn't have the Mojo's or was larger/heavier then the Dynafit 10 Carbons would be more attractive. The Snow Wolfs are looking like they could be a good addition to the quiver.

Arno, Intuitiv Big is the 8800, exactly the same ski.

May i suggest looking at Black Diamond for lightweight/performance touring skis. Twisted Evil

DB, not sure if I've told you this before (I've written it a few times on here) - if I have, just ignore me. I used the 8000s for the Haute Route last year, as did one of our guides, who raved about the ski (our other guide had the 4800s). I personally (at 90kg) find the 8000 just about the right stiffness, and love skiing on it in pretty much all conditions. I have the Freeride binding which is pretty heavy (about 2kg the pair), but he had the Dynafit bindings - which would make about 1.5kg difference in total weight. The only time I found them too heavy was on the afternoon ascent to the Bethol hut when the snow was really sticky and I ended up carrying about another 1-2kg of snow on the bottom of my skins after every couple of steps Shocked Twisted Evil - but that wasn't the ski's fault. I guess it all depends on where you want to strike the compromise between uphill and downhill performance.

Comparing the 8000s with the Intuitive Bigs one of my group was skiing on last week the Bigs look a pretty beefy ski to me - although he was also primarily a tourer, late 50s I'd guess (recently took early retirement).

DB, how about the Dynastar Legend 4800? LIghter than the 8000 (about 250 g according to http://www.sport-conrad.de/2A_00_Detail.asp?Kategorie=01-TSKI&page=&ArtNummer=70600504 ) and you get most of the 8000's performance (it should be the old intuitiv 74 (or pretty similar) so really good all around performance). And if you get them you might want to get the 172 length, so you can save a few more grams?

SMALLZOOKEEPER, I'm going a bit further back here. The snot green and orange Bigs were about 80mm under foot (at 188cm length) so a bit more like the 8000. The more recent Bigs were 89mm so, as you say, the same as the 8800s

Arno,

The 188cm 8800 / Bigs are 2180g per ski Shocked no wonder they felt heavy.
http://www.tramdock.com/tramdock/DYN0049/c1/s1/Dynastar-Legend-8800-Ski.html

Weight wise nothing seems to come close to the Völkl Snow Wolf (2500g / pair) with the same amount of performance, even the Black Diamond skis don't get as good reviews.

I'll see if I can test the SnowWolfs and the 8000's.

I've just done two runs on Black Diamond skis, the Verdict & the Havoc. I think I have answered your question...

http://www.bdel.com/gear/skis_overview.php

My new touring rig (all mountain, do everything ski) can't be mounted for a few days, nobody has a jig big enough for them. Everywhere is too busy to drill them by hand just now... Sad

Nothing to add about what sort of touring ski to get, but I was hugely impressed with the service I got from Telemark Pyrenees when I ordered some tele stuff just before Christmas. Nice people and excellent customer service.
