Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Anyone hired a car from Marco Polo and driven to the Corvara area.

Is there anything to be wary off?

No silly comments please boys and girls...

Drove to Arraba from Venice in Jan and then back during that big dump mid Jan. Hire car came with chains but no winter tyres- no problems at all as long as you give plenty of time. If you are self catering we stopped at a supermarket just off treviso sud off ramp, that was huge and reasonably priced. There is a big sports shop opposite which had some really good deals if you need to get some last minute kit.

New law passed recently all hire cars in Veneto now come with chains and winter tyres. Two routes up. The northern route through Zoldo Alto and Pescol is quicker than the southern route through Alleghe as you don't have to go through Belluno, which takes about twenty minutes. Belluno good for supermarkets and supplies if you're SC though. If you've got skis with you and an early morning flight in then ski Civetta for the afternoon on the way up. Well worth it.

Yeah, get some winter diesel in before you hit the mountains. Confused

We did MP to Selva in a Panda oil burner. The Panda left Selva on the back of a truck. wink

What is winter Diesel? and where do I get it? It might explain why my brand new hired Honda Civic left Risoul on a tow truck and I had to hitch home.

@cameronphillips2000,

When you arrive in Corvara, just fill it up, it will be winter diesel. Winter diesel can cope with low temperatures, regular diesel becomes waxy and sludgy and blocks the filters.

When we returned our replacement Panda to Europcar Marco Polo, there was a notice on the counter telling customers to fill up with winter diesel if going into the mountains. The girl behind the counter did freely admit that it hadn't been there when we'd collect our car. Madeye-Smiley

But lots of cars come with a full tank - which I guess could be a problem if you only have a short drive and it's extremely cold when you get there. You can buy wee bottles of an additive - might be useful to take one with you if the forecast is for v cold temperatures.

@pam w, A short drive wont get you from the low areas to the mountains. If the car is hired at altitude, It'll already have winter diesel in it.

Any issues will be sorted by the hire company, it just becomes a PITA. We were taxied from Selva down to Bolzano where we jumped in another Europcar car.

It is less than 100 miles from Venice to, say Cortina, about 1/5 or 1/6 of a diesel's range. IMHO 100 miles is a short drive

So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much

 You know it makes sense.

Just light a fire under the fuel tank before you come home.
Seriously, Corvara is probably not high enough to cause fuel freezing problems unless you get a very very cold snap.

It seriously is. Our Panda sludged up parked in the Hotel Alaska carpark, which is just up the valley from Corvara. Corvara is given at 1560m. Selva village is 1530m. The Alaska is at the top of the nursery slope, probably around 1560m, identical.

As I said earlier, when you arrive in Corvara, top it back up rather than leave it half empty for the week. You're gonna have to put more in at some point. Madeye-Smiley

Always best to keep the tank topped up. And if it's snowy/icy/slushy leave the handbrake off when parked.

The diesel in our car, filled up in Turin, waxed up in 2005 in Serre Chevalier at around 1500m.
