Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

@Angus og, a lot depends on when you are travelling to be honest! Today for example my incoming guests got caught in serious traffic hold ups around Munich at around 15:00 - it then took them a further 3 hours to get to Flachau (autobahn the whole way almost to the front door). This is supposedly low season but recent good snow and perfect bluebird weather forecast for the whole weekend meant lots of weekenders on the road.

One thing Google maps does not take into account in its calculations is the permanent 100km/h speed limit from the border crossing at Kufstein to the other side of Innsbruck. My gut feeling would be to head through Munich, then out via the A95 to Garmisch and then see whether the Fern Pass is a problem. today it was in both directions, again largely due to changeover day and day trippers.

There's not an awful lot in it. Depends on which route is stuffed with traffic. Starting from the Airport you're not making any big mistakes by going down the A8 in the directon of Kufstein, Wörgl, Innsbruck. The routes via Garmisch are good if you do it very early or very late, but can be a nightmare if they are full of Dutchmen and Lorries.

I drive that route late season and go via garnish & the pass there. No tolls, easy roads, always empty once out of Munich. Obviously may be different in high season. Chech conditions and decide.

I am travelling from heathrow on 4 th april and have a 7.20 am flight,so expect to be in my hire car around 10.30 /11.00 am.The rest of my friends are coming in from Edinburgh around 2pm so don't really want to wait in the airport for 4/5 hours.I have never driven from Munich as have always been going to resorts with railway stations.

@Angus og, It's a monstrous drive - good luck. Is it to late to change you flight to ZCH or INN and just get the train?

@red 27, not sure how a three hour drive is monstrous. It's a breeze, depending on traffic of course.

@Steilhang, +1 what's monstrous about 3 hours driving?

Except April 4th this year is Easter Saturday if I remember correctly, so there may be a lot of traffic heading for Italy and the Med along the A99 and A8. If you can, I would avoid the Wörgl route and have a pootle over the Fern Pass or go via Mittenwald and drop down to Zirl before picking up the A12. There are some great places to stop off and enjoy a super lunch in mittenwald or if going over the Fern Pass, try stopping for lunch at Schloß Fernsteinsee and order the trout - fresh out of their own lakes it was probably swimming free up to about an hour before being cooked for you!

Luckily for you most Europeans do not think about skiing at Easter, regardless of how early it is! If it is Easter, it is time for the first visit of the year to Gardasee or Croatia! Shocked rolling eyes wink

@Angus og,

Why not stop off somewhere en route to ski? If the weather is ok it would be shame not to have a couple of hours skiing - particularly as you will be driving past a number of ski areas not far from the motorway (or just off the Fernpass if you go that way).

Alternatively, you could take the train (from the airport) to Landeck (2 changes, 3.5 hour trip) then catch a bus from there to Ischgl. Details are on the DB Bahn website.

Each to their own, but I find it a really easy drive. I drive it on my own, and I don't know my way around Munich, I just look at a map and point it.

Obviously everyone is different, but to me it's a very relaxing drive. Watch out for speed cops just on the Austrian side of the border, there is often a speed trap there as I guess people come from Germany going fast.

@philwig, the Fern Pass with the tunnel section is a Schnellstrasse and you need a Vignette for it! There's even a sign telling you that but as it is in German most people ignore it. The fact you've got away with it the few times you've done it is down to luck! Driving around Munich can be a doddle, any idiot can navigate around it. However, on a major European Bank holiday, it can also be a nightmare as most of northern and western Europe converge on it on their way somewhere south and east. Similarly on the return journey, all points after Munich heading away from the Alps are relatively easy as long as nobody messes up and causes an accident.

The speed cops are for the Austrians returning from Germany where they've driven like bloody idiots like a lot of visitors unused to the speeds. Their main function is to help ASFINAG catch those who think they can use the autobahn without a Vignette! wink

But hey ho what do Steilhang and I know about it, we only live here all the time and work in or near the city! rolling eyes
