Poster: A snowHead
|
Sorry about the sad attempt at a pun ....
Off to Canada in a couple of weeks for my first taste of Canadian powder [hopefully].
I have a pair of Atomic Theorys which are, I think , 95mm underfoot.
I bought them due to the fine reviews of both their on and off-piste performance.
I have now used them for a couple of years with much happiness.
Do you think they would suffice for my trip ... or should I hire a set of super-wide 'boats'?
Do they make a massive difference in powder?
I will be doing a couple of days cat skiing as well.
Any advice would be appreciated.
TIA

Go there and see what there is to be had. I'm not a skier so I don't know what those are, but you can easily hire wide powder skis most places in BC. If you're riding cats, then ask your operator when you're there and they'll point you at what you will find best and a good place to rent it. I think Revelstoke may be a bit too far south at the moment, and I don't know what Golden's getting, so I'd wait and see.
For cats and heli most people use what look to me like pretty wide skis, although I don't bother looking at the names of them. Sure you can ride old school skinny skis in powder, but it's more fun with the right tool for the job.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Lucky s*d.
Yep they should be fine. The CAT operator in Revelstoke will provide you with Skis and a beacon anyway, its part of the price deal. nothing to stop you taking your own skis and theirs on the CAT. For the CAT skiing days in Revelstoke take some food, the packed lunches that they provide are awful.

I'm in Revelstoke at the moment. Sorry but no powder here (in resort), spring condition - its freeze thaw top to bottom. I was chatting to a lad who just been in KH and it's the same (or worse) there. Not a lot in the forecast to suggest that it will change over the next week or so. Hopefully it'll dump after then, if you're going cat skiing you'll get the best of what's out there anyway.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

@FoofyNoo, How heavy are you? I'm a little on the heavy side so need the extra float-but still sink! 95mm fine for most, obviously wider=more float but reckon most mere mortals couldn't tell the difference......

@FoofyNoo, my rule of thumb would be..
<20cm>20cm the powder skis will make everything a lot more enjoyable as long as you choose the right one for your style/terrain. If you do big faces you're going to want a stiffer skier, but if you're in trees you want one with a shorter turning radius and probably a bit more spring to it.

Last year they gave us nordica patrons for the cat skiing out of Fernie and they were quite a bit better than my 89mm salomons.
It's a whole bundle of fun if you've never done anything like it before, well worth the money!

Thanks everyone ..
@Bene, I am 11 stone, 8 pounds [162 pounds].
@Rogg ... blimey, I hope there is a dump. I don't fancy going all that way to ski on boiler plate!
Looks like I should give super fat skis a go .... don't want to miss out on ANY potential fun!
