Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Best way to get from Innsbruck to Mayrhofen

Thinking of going to Mayrhofen for a few days in Feb to join up with some friends. Not been before so looked into tranfers from Innsbruck and the prices seem ridiculous. It would work out a lot cheaper to hire a car but not really wanting to do that if i can help it. Was wondering if anyone has used public transport, bus or train to do the journey. Also best place for ski hire in Mayrhofen. Thanks

Soulo

Train to Jenbach then the Zillertalbahn (takes an hour as its a slooow train) to Mayrhofen, should be relatively cheap!

If you are on Chrome or something and can translate pages as you go, the website to organise things is oebb.at

Train. One change at Jenbach.Takes hour and a half to two hours depending on what time you get it. 30 euros return. As for hire Luggi's on the main street was good but his website doesn't appear to be working so don't know if he still in business but there many others. See links below.

The Sport 2000 shop in Mayrhofen is owned and run by a British guy, with assistance from his multilingual kids http://www.rentforfun.eu/ We got good service from them a couple of years ago and the shop is right next to the Penken gondola.

I did this train journey a few weeks ago between Christmas and New Year and I quite enjoyed it. But if you've found a very cheap car rental option then it's also a very easy drive and it's handy to have a car in Mayrhofen as the area pass covers the whole Zillertal. Well worth a day away at Kaltenbach and at Zell am Ziller/Gerlos.

Being a bit disorganised I didn't buy my tickets in advance - I got the timetable info from the website and just rocked up at the station to buy the tickets. Weirdly the tickets we ended up with were about a third cheaper than the price I'd been quoted on the website. No idea why.

The bus from the airport to the train station goes from right outside of arrivals(line F). There a machine outside the door to buy a ticket for c2 euro. Once at Innsbruck Hbf just go to the ticket counter and they will print you off all of the platforms etc. It is all pretty easy.

Luggis is still going and would also second the recommendation for Sport 2000.

Thanks for all the advice, it's much appreciated. Think the train looks favourite, will check out Luggis and Sport 2000.

@soulo, As you say you've not been to Mayrhofen before it's worth mentioning that use of the Zillertalbahn narrow gauge railway that takes you from Jenbach to Mayrhofen is included in your ski lift pass (along with ski buses). You and your friends may choose to use this for day trips to the other good Zillertal valley ski slopes at Zell am Ziller (Arena) or Kaltenbach/Hochfugen, both recommended. Very Happy

So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much

The train is free only for those dressed in skiwear AND carrying ski equipment. When we were on it at Christmas a family who were wearing ski kit and had lift passes (which they showed to the guard) were still made to pay (it's not very expensive) because they had not got skis/boards.
