We went 2 years ago to Alpbach.
We went at half term- the resort is very british so it was rammed at half term- crazily so- we had to treck up to the first stop just to get space on the bus. all the restaurants full at lunchtime etc.
If you are not considering half term its probably great.
The skiing was a bit limited I would say for keen intermediates for a week- but I did have a private lesson with a local instructor who was dying to take me off piste- it sounded like the opportunities for touring and off piste with a guide were fantastic. He'd been off on an expedition for a whole day with a group the day before.
Loved the whole atmosphere and feel of the place and it was fantasic value.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Also went to Alpbach two years ago - in early March. The pistes were very quiet and from 3.30pm, when the ski school finished, were deserted until the lifts closed at 4.30pm. No queueing anywhere. The snow was just about holding on and early in the week, was able to ski the itinerary run from the main area down to Inner Alpbach, which was great fun.
I would not have considered Alpbach but for the new link lift with Auffach which has doubled the size of the ski area and added a great deal of variety to the Alpbach ski experience. There's little ski to door as such and you have to take the bus from resort to lifts if you stay in Alpbach itself or in Reith, where we stayed.
Reith has an neat little gondola-served ski area of its own with one seriously enjoyable red run from top to bottom among the beginners areas and should not be discounted for a fun morning or afternoon.
And fantastic value for money. Best value accommodation, food and drink I've had in 40-plus years of skiing.
