Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Frame touring bindings.

Hi guys,

I want to do a little touring as well as a majority of downhill, so are thing of getting a frame touring binding fitted to my salomon q98's.

I am looking at the salomon guardians and the marker tour models. I know the marker is a lot lighter, which is important, but also hear that the salomon is stronger, stiffer and has a low stand height.

Has anyone had any experience with either or both? Is there any compromise for downhill from regular bindings?

Also, are there any recommendations for skins for these skis?

Thanks!

I was touring at the weekend with a mate- I have F10's on my old skis (albeit was on dynafits this time) and he was on Atomic Trackers (which I think are exactly the same as the Sally Guardians).

The Trackers were a great downhill binding (he thought them indistinguishable from an alpine binding), but uphill suffered a number of times from the riser bar falling the wrong way and letting the heel lock back in. If this happened on a steep icy section it would be a bit scary.

I like my F10s but in reality they are a bit of a no-mans land; for the 95% downhill I use those skis for I'd be better off with the trackers, and if there's much up I'll be on tech bindings.

Have been using Guardian16 and Tracker 13.Prefer them over Dukes/Barons.Bulletproof bindings, just great dowhill performance but uphill heavy.Never had issue with riser bar.Bought MNC version this year so can use touring boots if need it.

I'm pretty happy with my Marker F12s. Used to have Dukes but don't see the point now - heavier and don't ski any better. Ski performance is good - not up there with a high end alpine binding if you are really picky but WAY better than older touring bindings and (IMO) most tech bindings. I'll be using mine on wide skis this weekend. No touring expected but don't expect to feel that I am missing out on downhill performance

Having used allmost all the different options available. Although I am not a fan of the marker from a design and engeneering standpoint, for actual use I haven't found anything more practical than the Marker F10/F12. Yes they are bloody anoying at times but they just work.

Have a set of the Salomon Guardian 13's on a pair of Armada TST's , they are solid downhill and work well on the Armadas, I would recommend them with a one caveat.

Only concern is Salomons after sales service if a problem occurs. I bought the Salomon Vario Carbon Poles at the same time which have the end of the handle shaped for use locking and positioning climbing bar.....they were not cheap.

After a crash in which I cracked the lower carbon part of the pole, I was surprised to find that I could not buy a replacement lower section.
Salomon no help whatsoever , kept promising that a product specialist would be in touch, never heard from them, and stopped responding to my emails.
Dealer said they cannot get the part and sympathised and agreed with me that kit sold for use in back country should have spares support especially if part of a system such as the Guardian/Vario.
Like the bindings but not sure I would buy Salomon product again though.

I saw somewhere that the riser bar can be quite easily removed, and the arms slightly bent inwards to give more strength/less ability for the bar to drop back. Not ideal, but as a quick and dirty fix (to avoid the scaries)...
