Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Passo Tonale

Off to Passo Tonale in March have read a couple of reviews on here saying how rubbish it is.
Has anyone enjoyed it there. Our usual haunt is Sainte Foy but dew to tv coverage the prices have all gone up by a huge amount so passo was a good option as reasonably cheap. rolling eyes

It's not rubbish, it's a skiing holiday after all. It's a reasonable sized ski area with a fair bit of variety, including a glacier high up and tree skiing down to Ponte di Legno. It's also small and friendly. But the downsides are that it's a fairly ugly place, mostly charmless buildings strung out along a busy main road. It can also be really bleak when the weather closes in. But it's good value and none of the hotels are very far from the slopes. There's also a reasonable amount of après for such a small village. You can also get the bus to Madonna for a day which is included on your lift pass and well worth the trip.

@Jamie1974, as @queen bodecia, says, it's not rubbish at all. I suppose that depends on your definition of rubbish or otherwise though Laughing There's a decent amount of skiing, certainly for a week's holiday, it's pretty snow sure, the prices are reasonable and it's all pretty convenient. Which hotel are you in? We stayed in the Orchidea, at the 'other' end of the road from the main lifts, but only about 5 minutes walk and you can store skis in the hire shops at the lifts. The hotel was very nice, warm, comfortable, exceptionally clean, and the food was good. Go and enjoy yourself Very Happy

@Jamie1974, hey there we were there last year in March ,stayed at the hotel eden which is a good budget hotel
The snow conditions where excellent and look as good this year ,there's a couple of really good bars for a cheeky beer or three : Razz
We are beginner ish skiers, my only complaint would be you don't feel that you ski anywhere as most of the runs are in a line across the back of the town but having said that we really enjoyed our week

Like all high resorts, it can be a bit bleak when the weather closes in with the lack of trees but it's high, snow sure and some really steep stuff on one side of the valley. It used to specialise in school trips and many British children learnt to ski there in the 80s

I went last year and there was plenty of snow which made it quite enjoyable - there are a few itineraries which were good although we did not so them all as some were difficult to see/find - we should have got a guide. If you stay on the piste then you will probably ski it in a few days. I'd go back for the food at the refuge at the bottom of the T bar at Corno D'Aola which is a very traditional hut and seemed to get a lot of the touring crowd in while we were there. The bar next to one of the stations (La Baracca) seemed was a busy place for Apres - otherwise it was pretty quiet - Johno

If you can afford it, stay lower down in the valley in Ponte di Legno - the village has far more character. In terms of skiing, it has some potential for decent off piste.... I heard that Passo Tonale was the new Sainte Foy wink . We skied it a few weeks ago in pretty lean conditions and the last run of the day was this one

LOL! I can assure you that we have not increased our prices due to TV coverage.

1) There hasn't been any
2) We haven't increased our prices significantly in a couple of years

Even if you can't ski down to Ponte di Legno it is well worthwhile taking the very modern gondola down the valley as the skiing there is more interesting than the rather open slopes of Passo Tonale. And the day at Madonna should also be taken if you feel you've "done" the slopes at Passo.

The run down from the glacier is also easier than rated on the piste map. I seem to remember it was shown as black but I reckon this is only to deter beginners who have gone up to the glacier from clogging it up at the end of the day. As ever, it depends on the snow but anywhere else in the world it would not be steep enough to be rated as a black.

@Jamie1974, it's not the greatest resort, but nothing to be unduly concerned about either.

The main resort isn't pretty, and the main area of slopes about as dull as they come - but they're still ski slopes so all relative!

The many plus points include: Pontedeligno (lift linked) is a lovely little resort with interesting skiing, and good for a couple of days. Madonna/Folgarida/Marrileva can be reached by free bus, or by tour op excursion. Ski hire very cheap and very high quality. All resort prices cheap.

Echo what everyone else has said... went there last year(Feb) and 6 out of 7 days we were there was a complete white out so can't really tell you much about the scenery Laughing Extremely cheap, we stayed at the hotel Adamello which was a great hotel with excellent food/rooms. Only bug bear was the 5-10min walk back up to the lockers near the lifts each morning. Probably did us no harm as it cleared the head from the night before before hitting the slopes again

Apres - A bit limited really, apart from the 4-6pm happy hour at the "Glass House"(can't remember the name of it)... after that everyone seems to disappear for food and stay at their own hotels/chalets.

Went there last Feb half term and we really enjoyed it. Stayed at The Grand Paradiso which was virtually ski in ski out via a set of metal stairs. Very nice hotel and food was very good. Ski area was not massive but was more than adequate for our needs -3rd ski holiday. Make sure you try the Bombardino. Went out a couple of nights to watch football - FA Cup and Champions League. Would def go back there.
