Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Basic ski hire or VIP skier hire for intermediate?

 Poster: A snowHead

We are off to samoens in a couple of weeks. I'm booking equipment online and am wondering what to go for. My 10 year old will get the standard kids pack, but am wondering what to get for my daughter (13) and myself. We've done between 7 and 9 weeks skiing respectively and are both happy to ski reds but avoid blacks, and prefer Long blues to cruise. Technique wise, I can ski parallel fine until it gets too steep, then my snow ploughs return! Daughter similar.

Does it really matter what type of skis we get? Will the superior ones help actually my technique? I am cynical and think that if I pay online for the VIP, they will talk to me when I get there, figure out I'm clueless as give me the basic ones for the higher price!

Thoughts? Advice? TIA

there are usually three "grades" of hire skis - I would go for the middle one. The really beginnerish ones might be a bit soft and flappy at speed. If you are looking to improve technique a couple of private lessons would be a more reliable way. wink

Thanks pam! I will take your advice re skis.

We are skiing together on day one, we have booked a family group lesson on day 2, then the girls are in ski school for 2.5 hours a day thereafter. At the end of day 3 and 4 I have a one hour private lesson just for me! So....I have 4.5 hours tuition for myself booked. Hope that'll make a bit of a difference as I haven't had tuition for years.

I made the mistake years ago of thinking the more expensive skis would just be better quality and that the ski tech would give me something appropriate . In reality I just got skis too stiff for me, which just exaggerated skid turns and holding back my technique / skills.

One year in france I took back the lovely out of the wrappers Salomon Equipes the small ski hire place gave me (they were really nice skis) as there were too many rocks. I asked for something that he didn't mind getting damaged. I got some old Rossignol Cobras and my skiing improved overnight. Just being softer I found I could turn so much easier.

If I was hiring again these days I would tell the guy to give me something light and easy to turn. You can always go back the next day if they are too soft

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Ok, thanks for that.

I once got VIP skuas in saas fee and was struggling to ski well. I compared them to a male friend's skis ...( he's over 6 foot) and my skis were longer than his! ( I'm barely 5ft 6).
