Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Samoens ski hire and ski lockers advice please

 Poster: A snowHead

Hi, we are off to Samoens in a couple of weeks. We will be staying a couple of hundred yards from the tourist office...any recommendations for good value/ quality ski hire for adults and children? Is it worth booking in advance to get a discount? And what about lockers? I think we could avoid the ski bus and walk to the gondola, if we can ditch the skis and boots...are there lockers at 1600? Many thanks in advance for any advice.

PS We have reserved a sweet little studio through airbnb with a very nice owner and good reviews...i'm SOOO tempted to visit the Solutions Room to get a last minute catered chalet family room. That would be be very bad karma, wouldn't it....tempting though!

Roland Gay (SkiSet) and , I think, Ski Loc have lockers at 1600. I am sure this would mean renting from them. Both are in the middle of town. I doubt there is much difference n price between the ski shops. You could always ask for a discount! However it sounds like you are going at half term so all bets would be off and you need to get booking everything in advance.

Thanks a lot, I hadn't made the link between Roland Gay and ski set. But I did just see another reference to hi ski lockers online. Anyone know how I get a promotional code? Maybe I should ask the ski schools as we have bookings with two different schools ( private and group- zigzag and 360).

Which shop is better shop1 or 2? Does the one at village level have a better selection, I wonder ( for logistical reasons I'm guessing that may be the case).

Another option. You can also rent skis from xtreme glisses, which is a large shop at the bottom of the GME. They have a large heated room where you can leave things overnight. We used them at New Year and it worked very well, as we could very easily walk to them in comfy snow boots.

Thanks mother of 3.

You mention walking there...our apartment is just the far side of the tourist info office in the village. Do you think we will be able to walk in comfy boots or will we have to take the ski bus.
Any thoughts on walking distance to the gondola?

If you really want to walk then I bet you will get the bus after a day or two, especially to get back in the evening. If you are sure you will go up at the GME everyday then all of the suggestions are good ones. I didn't know about the extreme glisse option but it is a good shop in a good location. If you think you might want to go up at Morrillon or Vercland (some very good reasons to do so every now and again) then the up top storage options will become a nuisance never mind if you fancy a day in the PDS.

Hi Ian, that ski for that Thoth but the kids will be in school school, so we are bound to samoens and the GME! I'm also trying to decide whether the massif lift pass will be enough (as opposed to grand massif). We are intermediates but kids will be in ski school for a max of 2.5 hours, so is going right over to flaine likely? Thoughts?

Depending on your level you could easily ski to Flaine, do two r three runs and be back in time to meet the kids. The price diff between the Massif and GM passes is not huge. The skiing in Samoens and Les Carroz is great but Flaine does add another dimension. Actually
all of what I have said applies out of half term time. A big queue at Chariande Express and Vernant could scupper things.

@Noo72, hi sorry for delay, just back from weekend in Les gets Very Happy
Think walk about 10 mins, easy as is level, but think will depend on age of children and how tired you are, plus how busy buses are. We were there at New Year and the buses were v frequent so might be a better option. Agree re all said about Flaine and lift passes. We got the full ones and it was def worth it.

Off to Samoens at short notice this weekend - just looking at ski hire options and seeing quite a big difference - there are three shops in easy reach of our hotel - Sport 2000 and Intersport are coming up at €260 for two sets of skis for six days (1 red / intermediate, 1 black/advanced inc 1 set of boots and two helmets) - I was over in Oz En Oisans last month and paid about the same from Skiset.
Then I spotted a smaller indie shop - Samoens Sport - showing €165 for basically the same setup! €100 is not to be sneezed at and
a good deal is always good to find - but does such a big jump in price mean that the gear is likely to be more out of date, less well maintained - or is it just that the bigger chain stores are way overpriced?
