Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Powder Magazine have a a nice article on Dave Rosenbarger
He was most famous for mentoring Seth Morrison during the ordinary skier.
RIP - Chamonix can be brutal Sad

I was (am) under the impression that the current risk (this season) of avalanches made it silly to go off piste and steep, maybe I'm just more aware of it this season but this is now more than 10 deaths I'm aware of... Does it not say something?

I've attended funerals of friends who've died in extreme sports. Many of us there were well aware of the risk and rewards involved but it doesn't make it an easier to deal with.

My thoughts are with his friends and family.

A very sad day, I've lost 2 friends, Dave a Fellow skibum and Brendan O'Sulivan an Alpinist Snowboarder, he fell down the Tour Rond (details are sketchy but think he was climbing)

http://ben-briggs.com/tag/brendan-osullivan/

http://youtube.com/v/dggM8c6xfOc

(Again Sketchy details) The avie risk on the Italian slope was 4/5 yesterday, on the same aspect in the aiguille Rouge was 2/5 - we were their diging snow studdy pits and didn't find anything scary.

Jesus christ I can't believe that, read about Dave yesterday came on to post about it today and now hearing about Brendan??? I don't know these lads personally but they're the fifth deaths of well known faces from the Chamonix scene in the last six months. Brendan was irish right, used to ski with Ben briggs Luca Tom Grant et al? I can't believe it idris I'm so sorry. I used to read those blogs and just dream of living that life but now it's just frightening.

The news report now says no-one was caught. We saw lots of people skiing under Clot Gauthier during the week, so pretty lucky. Was the slide anywhere near the Super Draye black?

I suspect it was in an area well below the Eychauda drag where you cross over the piste and traverse off piste and the climb along a ridge, with all the powder transported by the winds of the past few days it would have looked very tempting to maybe people having just arrived and uber keen to lay down some tracks.

Pistehors is v. good however ANENA is the official French site that collates all the statistics - agreed it's not updated 24 / 7 Smile Yes, 35 hrs for those who are on a salary not for the "independents" and at least it gives you time to ski Smile

Really sucks. 'American Dave' was a legend.

There are some photos on TGR of the face before and after from some people who skied it around an hour before...

On January 23, 2015, the face on the 500m Direct Marbrées Couloir ripped out deep about about 11:30, which was 1:15 after we skied it from the 1st tram with a local Italian crew.

After photo at 12:30 by Soccorso Alpino Valdostano (Valley of Aosta Mountain Rescue).

Looks class 4 in size. A party behind Dave reported that the monster slab "went almost 2 km down the valley over the cliffs." (4x run) This east/south east face picked up lots of snow over a few days. Local italians were talking about skiing chest deep in the fog. The sun was definitely baking and the ambient temperature was probably around -18C the night before. The crowns look to be 2m or more.

I have some nice but now scary before photos.

Matteo skiing the center with 4 Americans finding their way onto the normal entrance (dots behind Matteo).

Matteo traversing back onto the Direct (my crampon pouch, which dropped from the top, sitting in the gut further down).

Matteo opening up the shady return (out of the main line of fire).

EDIT: Can't get the 'after' photo to embed, but it's here: http://www.tetongravity.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=163064&d=1422095098

Shocked I was skiing on that side of the massif on Friday with two other Cham-based snowHeads and we were admiring the skier tracks on that face earlier in the morning, before it avalanched.

snowrider good article - thanks for posting...

With nothing before us, no tracks to follow it becomes a form of expression, an addictive progression and as the progression develops, the snow gets deeper and the terrain gets steeper and our journey takes us away from the controlled environment of the patrolled mountain and suddenly it is no longer just about the ride.

Now we are playing in the heart of the untamed mountain and we must learn the rules of the game all over again. Rules that have been forged through time and experience but are easily overlooked, ignored or simply brushed aside in the race to get out there first?

This is the great risk with dangerous sports - it becomes a race to the bottom about needing to take/ignore an ever-increasing level of risk to get the adrenaline 'hit'. I haven't skied at this level but anyone who's climbed will recognise the bittersweet dilemma.
