@tim000, maybe an insurance cop out. The last couple of winters have been rather dry and the lower runs depended on artificial snow to stay open. This forms really big hard ice patches if it goes through several freeze-thaw cycles. Making the slope black means that they can say that anyone who has an accident was skiing beyond their abilities. That route looks like it takes in part of the forest road down from the Ahorn with some steep bits in between. The slope is fairly steep in summer, so with artificial snow, etc, perhaps it has become and accident black spot?

@Samerberg Sue, i have seen a youtube clip of the run and there is quite a bit of narrow track . so thats probably the road part . was thinking of giving it a try but dont fancy the narrow bits on a board http://youtube.com/v/Wvi_TPP-5VE

always used to be black. don't think I ever saw it open. maybe by making it black again they can get away without bashing it daily?
saying that it's on odd run anyway. Ahorn is beginner's heaven, but with a black run down to 600m.

Done it a few times and love it. Should be a black in my view. Because the Ahorn attracts a lot of beginners its been really empty when I've done it. Seem to remember doing it once and not seeing anyone else at all.

Been to Mayrhofen over 5 times and we enjoy all of the Penkenbahn, Hinterlux and Zill area most of the week but without fail every year we save the last afternoon to do the top to bottom Ahorn as the very last run of our holiday then have a wee pint at the bottom. January 10th to march 28th its always been skiable to village, though can be a bit heavy and artificial at the bottom near beginning and end of season. It starts blue, bit of red, bit of blue, plenty red and near the end the last steep bit can be a salopette ripping black depending on conditions.
I am a skier and boarder with plenty experience and admit the Ahorn has little to offer at the top for medium to advanced snowheads but for a few hours one afternoon the top to middle run a few times and the top to bottom run is cracking. And another tip for Mayrhofen skiers, the Eggalm area is a bit further out than some ski but is a awsome hill with some nice tree line off piste.
The Ahorn is a huge run and should not be missed if in Mayrhofen, one of the best runs in Europe cant wait to be on it again in 8 weeks .
P.s narrow bits on board are piece of wee wee if you have boarded a bit.
And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

@raydar, welcome to sH
does look like a good run on that youtube vid. might give it a go next time i'm there.
Have done the Eberharter valley run in Kaltenbach before. That is very heavy snow cannon snow at the bottom, and also narrow and steep in one spot. Personally I'd do that first thing rather than and end of day thing, and tbh, probably suggest the same for Ahorn. Do the valley run before it's heavy moguls, then head back up (or up Penken after the queues have gone) and play all day up high, and downlift at end of day.
Zell is my favourite, although next time I might try parking up at the Königsleiten end.
So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much

@andy, Good point, why in Austria are numbers used yet in France it is names. Mind you they change those as well
Otherwise you'll just go on seeing the one name:

Was there last week and noticed that out of date maps were still available in places, be careful.

it varies. even in one place they differ.
eg Les Gets has names, but Morzine has letters and I think both have numbers counting down the piste (handy if you need to direct blood wagon).
and in the dolomites, Arabba has names+numbers, but San Cassiano has just numbers (i think)
Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person

The ahorn valley run is a great run but I wouldn't class it as black.
But don't tell everyone about Eggalm. Empty pistes, tree lines and the toastiest heated chair lift in Christendom!!
Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

@andy, off the mayrhofen tomoorow . going with a mate who skies . planning to do the Königsleiten end . the plan is to get the bus to gerlos and ski/board to Königsleiten and back and maybe back to zell if there is time . dome zell to gerlos a few times . hate the flat bit on the way however the forcast is for loads of snow most of the week so big miles might not be possible.
Zell->Gerlos has an uphill bit. And there's always a wall of people that have just lost momentum.
Gerlos->Zell is downhill, but always cold, possibly made worse cos Gerlos/Königlseiten is always big wide open and sunny.
Gerlos->Königsleiten only accessible by black run with a sign that says for expert skiers only. But it's mostly nice and wide. Just annoying when busy. But that means Königsleiten is always mostly not crowded and mostly competent skiers, and all the John Waynes taking a dump style skiers are in the icy moguls in Zell.
Actually, I have thought about parking in Zell, get bus to far end and eventually ski back.
edit: not so keen on the valley run in Gerlos. Always a bit slushy. Nice thru the trees though.
Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

@andy, dont think slush will be a problem for me next week
