Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Adult vs Children's Ski Boots

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
My girlfriend needs new ski boots and has found a pair of childrens ones in her size for a great price.

She's about 5'1 and 50 ish kg. She's a fairly advanced skiier, more than capable on piste but rarely ventures off. Would a kids boot be suitable?

The boots in question are HEAD and have a flex of 50. I'm not sure if that information is relevant or not.

Reasons for/ against?

Cheers

*Should probably add that I have done a quick search and didn't really throw up much in the way of definitive answers. £80 for kids ski boots vs £200+ for the adult equivalent.

Is it to do with height up the calf maybe? I confess, no idea. I was having similar thoughts as daughter is now in a size 5 shoe so wondering if I will have to buy more expensive adult boots now for her?

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Similar to the above poster don't fully know what the difference is, but I am short and have a small foot, and once bought a pair of riding boots in the kids section, not a smart move as children tend to have skinnier legs than even slim adults,. ( like little birds really straight little legs)

Is she also planning to use Junior bindings, or were you going to put junior boots into an adult binding?

The "equivalence" that you refer to with £80 vs £200 boots may not be valid - my son has Lange kids "race boots" which look like adult Lange race boots, but once you pull them apart, the similarity is only cosmetic.

A 50 flex is pretty soft for an advanced skier (my 25kg 7-yr old skis a 60 flex, although kids flex ratings seem even less scientific than adult ones).

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

My internet research suggests that if you're a beginner it maybe won't make much difference but if you're going to be throwing yourself around a bit you probably want to be going down the adult route.

Had a look into flex and things. Apparently it is the manufacturer that dictates the index and there isn't a universal scale/ measurement? Found that a bit unusual.

@RosigLOL, if it is a Youth/ junior race boot then it will have an adult Norm sole and will fit into adult bindings IF it is a childs boot then the sole profile is a little different and it will ONLY FIT IN A CHILDS binding which is NOT suitable for an adult to use.... for an advanced skier of that weight i would be looking at 80-100 flex depending on power and leg length as you say the flexes are not the same company to company so it is a little bit about what feels right, she should be able mto bend the boot sensibly in the store as it will stiffen in the cold, but you have speed momentum and a pair of skis to help you

@CEM, When you say bend the boot in store, what does that mean? I can stand on tip toes in mine, they don't seem to have any "bend".
