Poster: A snowHead

Hey All,
I'm taking my first ski 'touring' trip in March this year and gearing myself up with everything I need. I'm going to buy a pair of dedicated touring boots (I have my own alpine boots so I'm looking for a full on touring focussed boot, not a hybrid boot), however i'm finding it very difficult finding a touring boot with a shell thats ideal for my foot size and shape. I've got fairly pretty wide feet but the bigger issue is the large instep that i have. With not so much of a problem as someone can heat and blow out the side to accommodate for foot width, but it's the instep which is less 'customisable' so I need a boot with an outer shell that naturally fits a deeper foot/instep.
From helpful boot fitting folk in Ellis Brigham, Profit and Snow & Rock, where i've recently tried what they all said would be a good bet for a high instep the Scarpa Maestrale 2015 and it just doesn't have enough room for me depth of foot (loosest setting on the mid foot clip, on the right fit boot in terms of foot length and its still way too tight), I'm told the Scott Cosmos 2, Black Diamond Quadrant, Atomic Waymaker Tour 110 (thougha hybrid boot) would be good bets at fitting a high instep foot. Any advice on a boot that would seem ideally suited?
Thanks

jbk12, I have a wide forefoot (EEE in shoe parlance), very high arches (instep) and narrow heel. I have Dynafit Mercury boots that only required some work on the shell toebox to accommodate my wide forefoot, plus Intuition liners heat-moulded to my feet. I haven't had issues with the buckle over the arch area.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Thanks Zero_G, Dynafit Mercury added to the list, appreciated.

My instep is pretty high and, more importantly, really doesn't take pressure well (yeah I'm a wuss). I ski in Maestrale RS with a foam injection liner and this works. Most days I don't even close the buckle over the instep, sometimes I do but mainly in the afternoon. Maybe this could work for you.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Yeah, it;s a possible. Was advised that this'd be a good shell option but tried it the other day and not to far off on foot width, but again really struggled on the instep, with the lightest buckle setting i had a great deal of pressure on the top of my foot. Maybe this is about the best i'm gonna do and I'll have to hire some boot magicians to try and dig deeper into the boot and blow the width out a bit, but still hoping there might be a deeper boot out there for me.
I think i must have hoofs not feet!!

Try on a Black Diamond Quadrant is the standard answer to this (I know you've mentioned this already).

Sounds like your feet are a little like mine. This may go down as sacrilegious, but you could try a size up. The most important thing in my uneducated opinion is that you have a nice firm fit around your instep and ankle. A bit of wriggle room for your toes isn't necessarily a bad thing - may save you a black toenail if you have having to kick steps for example.
I have Dynafit Vulcans. For a real performance fit length-wise, I should be a size down, but I'd never get my instep into them. So I went a size up - nice snug fit where it matters and I can kick my feet into a slope with no toe bang issues

Just try and avoid any boot with a metal bar/spine as it's anchor for ski/walk.

I'm based in Hertfordshire. OK cool i'll add the Dynafit Vulcans to the list and make sure i try some Black Diamond Quadrants.
CH20 - Do you say avoid the metal bar spine mechanism as it's known to be prone to failure or something?

@jbk12, I am also based in Hertfordshire. I went down to Ski Bartlett in West London to get touring boots as a friend had told me they have a decent selection - more an Aladdin's cave really. I also have the high instep problem and ended up with Garmont Lusters. Needed a bit of tweaking but are now fine - can ski all day without pain or numbness (still a novelty for me!).
