Hi everyone,
I'm in the process of choosing some skis to buy and have narrowed it down to either the soul 7 or sin 7. I think in a 180 length.
I'm 5 10, 70kg, about a level 8 skier, I ski resorts in europe, mainly france.
Previously skied roughly 50/50 piste/ off piste but now want to concentrate a lot more on freeride, therefore want a ski aimed and this but has the ability for a bit of on piste when required. Also want to be able to ski a few bumps.
I'm wondering whether i need the extra width of the soul in the areas where i will ski and also whether, as i am quite light, the 180 length in the sin will give me enough float when needed and not require the extra width of the soul.
Which do you guys recommend?
Anyone tried both and have any thoughts?
Any help would be much appreciated, want to get these bought soon!
Thanks

I'm 5 9 and 68kg.
I haven't skied those skis, but my everyday skis are 190 and 118mm underfoot, and I wouldn't change them. Great in pow, crud, bumps and fun on piste as long as it's soft enough to get an edge in.
So I'd go with whichever is fatter, and bump up the lenght a bit.

Tried both and hated both to stiff on the back end and not enough pop. I wiil stick with my K2 obsethed for powder days.
They are a lot of fun.

I have nothing like ur body type, heavier and bigger, but skieed the soul 7s. Was absolutely fabulous in the powder, would imagine good for at up to 18" of pow. Absolutely hated them on the fast groomers though, felt so sluggish. In the end, I still like my cham 97s more than anything I tried, even if they do look funny.

Just goes to show how much personal preference there is in ski choice as I hated the Cham 97's when I tried them. Fine going an easy pace in powder but up the speed and they were very "hooky" and not at all stable at speed on groomers - flappy as hell would be my description!
For the OP - I can't comment specifically on the Soul 7 Vs Sin 7 but I went from Dynastar Mythic Riders (about 90mm waist I think) to Blizzard Cochise (107mm) and don't regret it at all. I am staggered how good they are on piste and they are as good everywhere off piste as I expected so I wouldn't let the width put you off.

@nemesys, ha! Yes do true. Had such high hopes for the soul 7s as they are so much "the ski to have" these days. I just got one of those track your speed apps and did 45 mph on the chams and have liked the speed aspect more each season. I think you just need to demo them and see what u like. I demo a pair of heads rev 98 that I liked a lot but didn't have pow for them.

I'm very intrigued to see what answers come back.
I've skied the Soul 7's twice and loved them - I'm a bit shorter than you, not commenting on weight, as I'm a girl But I haven't managed to get my hands on a pair of the Sin 7's yet, which I really want to try. Reason being - easy to do anything and everything on the Soul 7's, complete confidence straight away etc, but I did comment to the people running the tests that ideally I'd prefer something a bit livelier, poppier - and they immediately said "Ah, you want to try the Sins!"
I do like quite a lively ski though that I can chuck around and get it kicking back (without too much weight). Soul 7's were almost too good to give me that, very smooth predictable ride.

If you like the Soul 7 and want some better performance in other snow types besides just powder, give the Atomic Automatic 109 a go (or the Century 109 if you're a girl). Great poppy, lively ski with suprisingly good on-piste and bump performance. I ski the 2014 Automatics 117 myself, and on days that don't even count as powder days (if warm and with a lot of bumps, slush or crud) I prefer skiing them over my Fischer Ranger 88 TI's.
My girlfriend (1,68 - 69 kg - ski instructor) tried the 2014 Automatics (117) in 179 a few weeks ago on a deep snow play day in Austria and loved them. They have quite a bit of rocker in tip and tail, so the length nor the width was a problem, not even on an icy beginner slope back to the lift.

I purchased a pair of Soul 7s at 180 length last year and can say with certainty that they are the best skis I have ever owned (i'm 50+ and have owned quite a few)! Get them on their edges and with their sidecut they deal with 'hard' piste or 'smear' them in powder conditions! They were so good and such a major development that Rossignol have left them untouched for this season.

I haven't tried the Soul 7s but I tried the Sin 7's at the Snowheads trial at Tamworth fridge and loved them. I'm a girl 5'6, 57kgs and found the 172's perfect for me. Wanted to but didn't get to try them in St Anton over Christmas week due to the lack of snow, but I'm hopefully going to get back out to the Alps some time again this season and would dearly love to try them out properly with a view to buying. They gave a nice amount of pop and were almost ridiculously easy to get from edge to edge which I wasn't expecting. Not sure ultimately how lively they are given the limited run I had at Tamworth, but I was grinning all the way home. I'm also not too bothered that my current skis got a bit wrecked skiing mud/stones in St Anton

I bought soul 7s last winter and they are awesome, great in the deep stuff but light enough to still be responsive edge to edge. I also bought some Line Sir Francis Bacons this winter which given the conditions in France so far have only seen 2 powderish days but they are great fun too.

Rossignols tape measure is a bit weird as the soul 7 180cm is exactly the same as the saffron 7 in 178cm (stood them next to each other in the rossi shop in Les carroz, its the same ski!) as a bloke if you don't mind fancy top sheet than saffron 7 could be a bargain....and can not feel too bad about 2cm!! |
I read this is because women were more likely to ski which was just below 170cm or 180cm while men liked the sound of the longer ski, it's pretty funny that they exactly the same ski and shows how much notice should be paid to marketing bs.

I've demo'd both in 188cm. Soul 7 felt way too turny in the powder. It was not very good in moguls with a somewhat stiff tip. Surprisingly good on groomers though. The Sin 7 is just a little narrower and with the tail not so rockered like the S3's were very good on piste. You give up some float. It's a bit more agile. Better in the moguls. Not really good at any one thing. Basically a jack of all trades, except when the snow gets deeper than 16" inches or so but that is a personal thing. I still have my S3's which, IMHO were not worth giving up for the Sin 7. S3's are better in moguls, better float in the pow, and handle the trees well too. I think the one area where the Soul 7 shines is in mank/cut up pow and crud. That rockered, and somewhat medium stiff tip really handle those conditions very well. You can really get going on the Soul 7. It's not a charger, but it is forgiving if you get caught in the back seat.

This - dreadfully disappointing ski. I also found them inaccurate and weirdly smeary in powder too: I think the stiff rear and light tips make for a very odd set of handling characteristics. I have no idea how Rossignol have sold so many.

I bought Soul7s at the beginning of last season having tested them against other skis, but without testing Sins, which were not being sold in UK last season. I loved them then, and still do. They are very versatile - great off piste and much better on piste then fat skis deserve to be. Unsurprisingly, their on-piste performance is not as good as specialist piste/slalom skis, but it is more than good enough unless you love mogul-skiing or want to race all day.
I have not skied on Sins, but I did some internet searching on them for a friend who was considering a pair. The two points I remember from reports of tests were that (a) that they were more intermediate than advanced, and (b) great for moguls, which to my mind seem a bit contradictory. My friend, who is an advanced skier, opted for the Souls, and loves them as much as, if not more than, I do

skied both Sin 7 and S3 over christmas, in various conditions, from thin piste to deep powder. S3's felt heavier, Sin7's quite nimble and light underfoot. Sin7 tip/tail almost too light, and didn't feel like they would last long - and in powder, the Sin's didn't give as much lift as I'd hoped. was skiing 174, I weigh 66kg, reasonably aggressive skier (when I'm not broken). ymmv.

@carroz, spoke to a guy at Ellis Brigham who tested 40 skis for their 2015 line up. I explained I already had bought them so he wasn't in a position to sell from the outset. His view they were best in category and would be his first choice. I don't subscribe to the view that editors will be unduly lenient, my experience comes from working 25 years in marketing. And I remember well a poor review in Boards Magazine for a brand called Klepper. The importer was incensed that the testers advised readers that the board could potentially fall apart. To cut a long story short, importer and testers met to put the board through its paces. There were no surprised faces from the testing team when the board disintegrated under duress and that was the end of the Klepper brand in the UK and any paid advertising.

I had the opportunity to ski the Soul 7 in 180cm (i'm about 6ft / 13 stone) for two days in January: great fun in the small offering of powder we had whilst I was in Whistler. They also coped fairly well with the mashed potato we had to suffer when it rained the next day.
There were no serious moguls to contend with so can't comment on performance there, but despite being relatively easy to get on edge and coping fine with soft groomers, I wouldn't have trusted them on the icy hardpack that followed. I was very glad to switch to some Nordica Doberman Spitfires for that!
