Poster: A snowHead
|
I'll be skiing for Christmas week in La Plagne, then I want to spend 3 days over the New Year with my girlfriend somewhere in the French Alps. It's 90% likely that we won't ski, so we're looking for a place with some atmosphere, other stuff to do (not just a ski resort), etc.
I was thinking Chamonix, but it's hard to get accommodation...
Any suggestions on where to go?

Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person

Cedric, You could try Annecy, but whether there's enough there for 3 days, I couldn't comment, although it has got a Casino. Might even have a Casino hypermarche as well.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Megeve - nice town, lots to do, good atmosphere.

yes, Megeve would be great, especially if your girlfriend likes shopping and won't be using your credit card. Pretty town, rides in horse drawn carts, etc. Incredible, mind-blowing, wallet-blowing, restaurants. But often no snow at resort level, or only a few dirty heaps. There's a good array of walking trails though, and lift access from the town centre.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Another thought - if you've never tried them, have a go at snowshoes ("raquettes") which can be hired cheaply and fit on any chunky walking shoes or boots. Use them with long batons (like cross country poles) and plodge around. Some resorts have trails which can only be used by people with raquettes, which are signposted (balisé) but not pisted, so they are not useable by people without raquettes. They are great fun, and give you a chance to get off the beaten track (literally) and into the snowy woods. They're also fun to yomp down powdery slopes, though obviously you need to be a bit careful about where you choose to do that. Quite a different experience of winter in the mountains. Take a picnic. It's quite romantic. And a lot cheaper than shopping in Megeve.
